Lap of Luxury: Lalique

Irish singer (and one of the worlds best-selling artists) Enya is said to be one of the biggest collectors of Lalique on the planet. In 1997 she purchased Ayesha Castle in Killiney, a castle built in the 1840s for Queen Victoria and her succession to the thrown, about 100 miles north of Dublin. She renamed it Manderley Caste and when BuzzFeed visited the castle in 2016, the journalist made special mention of Enya’s master bathroom (no photos were included) and it’s floor to ceiling design in Lalique glass. The journalist said it was one of the most amazing things she had ever seen.

This is a bit weird. I am related to Lalique by his first wife Louise Lambert. I know almost all other familymembers of the Laliquefamiliy and wrote many books about René. I am not sure whether he would have liked what they have done with his legacy. In mind and soul he remained a jeweller as a glassmaker with a dazzling jeweller's eye for detail, a quelity so closely connected to René himself. I doubt whether the modern pieces share that specific quality.
