Los Angeles: The Los Angeles Police Department’s (LAPD) Force Investigation Division is investigating an Officer-Involved Shooting (OIS) that occurred in 77th Street Division.
On September 3, 2024, at around 11:43 a.m., 77th Street Division uniform patrol officers responded to a radio call of an “Assault with a Deadly Weapon,” at the 5800 block of Estrella Avenue. The suspect later identified as Bryan Rodriguez was reported to have vandalized a parked vehicle and pointed a handgun at a resident.
As the officers arrived in the area, they observed Rodriguez standing in the street and requested backup. Rodriguez threw what appeared to be a rock toward the officers’ police vehicle and then ran south to the intersection of Estrella Avenue and 59th Street. Moments later, Rodriguez stopped, faced the officers, and pointed what they believed to be a handgun in their direction.
Rodriguez then ran west on 59th Street and south on Bonsallo Avenue. The officers followed Rodriguez in their vehicle while broadcasting their location. Rodriguez eventually ran east into a driveway toward the rear of an apartment building at the 5900 block of Bonsallo Avenue. The officers stopped their vehicle in the roadway near the apron of the driveway, stood behind their respective doors and ordered Rodriguez to drop his handgun. Upon reaching the rear of the apartment complex, Rodriguez faced the officers and again pointed what they believed to be a handgun at them, resulting in an Officer-Involved Shooting.
Rodriguez was not struck by gunfire and was taken into custody without incident. He was subsequently transported to 77th Regional Jail, where he was booked for Assault with a Deadly Weapon.
No officers or community members were injured during this incident. The object possessed by Rodriguez that was initially believed to be a handgun, was recovered at scene and determined to be a stun gun. Force Investigation Division (FID) investigators responded to the scene and are investigating this incident.
