One thing I love about your style of troubleshooting is it feels like you are slowly unraveling a murder mystery plot. First you diagnose the problem, then elaborate the symptoms, in this case it's HDD LED glowing and the PCH getting hot. Then from the schematics you showed us what causes the HDD LED to glow, which is 5VS. Then you explained why 5VS which is a run voltage is not supposed to be made before switching ON the power button. Then you explained about the circuitry that controls the production of this run 5VS from always 5VAl. Then we had two probable issues 1. Either the MOSFET is bad or the resistor is bad. The dual MOSFET showed no short at source/drain pins in cold conditions. And that leaves us with the bad resistor issue. You shorted the resistor and the board is normal and taking 0.42 V again. HDD does not glow. PCH does not heat. Problem solved. Wonderful! Thanks for making it interesting sir. Feel like I learnt a lot ;)

Very good demo, root cause is the open circuit 470k resistor (this causes CMOS drain). You are 10 times better than chiptronics.
