I bought a Macbook Air back in 2012 and noticed it had a sticky/dodgy key. I took it to the Mac store to be looked at. After playing around with it for a bit, replacing the key, etc, they determined that the whole keyboard and top case needed to be replaced. Even though it was replaced under warranty I noticed the fee they put on the repair receipt was over $400 (more than a third the cost of the computer), just to fix a small issue with one key.

I'm still dailying a 2011 Hp Probook 4430s. It's an absolute tank that keeps trooping along. The main reason I still hang onto it is because it has a socketed CPU, and when I refurbished it I maxed out all of what the hardware can support. i7-2630qm, 16gb DDR3, a 256gb SSD for the OS, a 2tb HDD for mass storage (optical drive caddy adapter) and a 512gb stubby NVME (expresscard to NVME adapter) for older and/or low-resource games (Battlefield 2, Freelancer, Sid Meier's Pirates, etc). When she finally breathes her last, I'm planning to buy a Framework laptop and give it the same treatment, run it for years to come and repair or upgrade what fails myself. I build computers as a hobby and have watched over the past 10 years the steady increase of anti-consumer practices (particularly in laptops), and I presently have zero intentions to own a laptop that is designed to screw me over.

Key difference is the Envy had a touchscreen display and can flip to turn it into a tablet. Bad thing about HP laptops (at least with the one I have) is proprietary charger. To clarify, the charger that comes with the laptop is the only one that will charge the battery. Any other, be Universal/other HP laptop charger (same insert plug) will display message of not being Genuine Part or not being the original charger that came with the laptop, bricking the device to the equivalent of a portable desktop getting power from the wall outlet.

Unfortunately having a riveted in keyboard is a compromise we recently took on a work/family laptop. This is an AMD powered ThinkPad E16 Gen1, which we got a good price on at our usual business reseller. Great machine, it feels like a newer and mostly more refined iteration on my e585, but the cost-cutting measures are apparent. Since it will be treated gently it should last, we've had worse laptops hold out, but we also have the absolute bricks of old HP EliteBooks. Which are great, but one had a screen cable fail (so some form of hinge problem), the other one needed the keyboard replacement. And as great as their chassis are and as modular as they are constructed, the inside is almost as weak as this consumer rubbish due to the weak and finicky connectors and ribbon cables. Oh well, while I have considered Framework, ThinkPad probably stays my brand for the better keyboard and physical mouse buttons. For the next replacement I'll be more picky, but we are all set on good working hardware here, actually managing to make laptops last for over a decade by my maintenance.
@alfredklekАй бұрын
Plastic rivets? Awesome! Just like my three Models M! What you need to do, see, is meticulously drill them all out and replace them with tiny bolts with little tiny nuts. Make sure you locktite them and pet your invisible cat so that they don't come loose. Of course it won't work on a modern PC unless you by an active adapter but you can buy one an all knowing tortoise at the edge of the wastelands. Totally worth it for the buckling springs. Keep it real folks and don't fear the void!
