@Frances When she was a child, her voice was nice. From France, I remembered her singing when she must have been 14 or something, on French TV for the first time and that was okay, impressive for a kid. Then I remembered her singing in English in her teenage years. It was nothing memorable. Then happened her third French-language album: D'eux (1995). It was composed and written by Jean-Jacques Goldman during his golden years, when almost anything he produced for other singers became a hit. So the album he wrote for Céline, D'eux, was finally the one that launched her French career. I remember watching some videos of the recording of D'eux and Goldman was commenting that the hardest part for him was teaching Céline how to sing for a French public. She was used to singing in English for an International audience. To a French, English sounds nasal, not always nice to listen to. Plus for the American music market, Céline had the habits of doing gymnastics with her voice: belting, vibrato, tremolos, whatever you call it with the young pop singers nowadays. French tend to favor interpretation, emotion to technique while the English-speaking market seems to show off technique anywhere and everywhere. So Goldman took time to show Céline how to sing clearly, simply, with sensitivity. From that point on, Céline alternated French album and English album. But I noticed that after D'eux, her following albums in French, though still successful, were less pleasing to my ears. She slowly reverted to a more nasal voice and a more American way of singing. With the 1998 album, still produced by Goldman, S'il suffisait d'aimer, her voice sounds pleasant though in a few songs, you can hear the American style and nasality start peeking. It might look like the less Goldman was involved, the more she reverted to singing like an American pop star.

Caruso is my favourite song from Lara, the RESONANCE and consistency is superb! You can clearly hear the quality there... It is not just belting but rounding your belt even at upper register! And Only Lara can do that technically perfect!

I never knew about Lara Fabian until I heard Dimash performed Adagio at the 2017 The Singer. I read a lot about her from the responses among you tube ciewers. She is a sogwriter with a voice as she said during an old performance at one American TV appearance where she performed her ballad masterpiece Adagio. As I listened to her performances, I saw her passion , her presentation of the song, the vocal quality, the clarity all so extraordinary. She reaches my heart when she sings and her ability to tell the story of her song. I also found out that she has a sincere heart, she reaches out to other performers and tell them how she loves their takes of the song. This character makes Lara a beautiful human being and heart. Reading the viewers comparison between Lara and Celi r Dion, I can't help but to express my thoughts about these 2 great singers. Lara possessess the warmth, passion and clarity of her voice, can belt high notes with ease. On the other hand, Crline can belt high notes as well but nasally and can't feel passion in her voice. I am loving Lara Fabian more and more. She is a fabulous songwriter and singer.

As to me, her best live song is PERDERE L' AMORE - same recording, same show... and all that emotion she brings while singing it, especially because Perdere l'Amore means a lot to her ; she said the song is related to her childhood, reminding her italian mother (or grandma?) who sang it so often. Please check it too if you'd like to. And here's another one : JE SUIS MALADE - Which she covered from an old French song. Her performance is sooooo strong and emotional that it spread all around the world, making other singers start their own cover too :)

An interesting fact. .. she compete at Eurovision Song Contest in 1988 and Celine too! She was singing for Luxembourg and Celine for Switzerland.. Lara got the 4th place, but Celine won the contest... If you watch both performances, you can see they keep their own singing style.. yes, maybe is similar, but not for a copy .. This is a very old video. At one point, when Lara sang only in French, she and Celine were rivals. Then Lara also signed with SONY (Celine's label) to make an English album. Celine was a superstar already. It was a great album but all of a sudden, Lara disappeared from public view...and instead of embarking on a great international career, she went back to singing mainly in Europe...just saying. Talk of the town is, Celine's people saw the threat that Lara was about to pose to Celine's career. Just like you, everyone would have compared her to Celine. To top it all off, she was a little younger, much prettier, and much more educated - as she spoke four languages fluently. so they paid handsomely to keep her career on the down low, so to speak.

hmmm I just read this now... I think both are super talented. I have a hard time to believe that ANY label would agree to pass up on an opportunity to make MORE $ and agree to keep Lara on the DL... I have seen both in concerts earlier in their careers and the big obvious difference back then was that live Céline was way more on Pitch and Lara had to work hard to correct that... I love Lara's darker tone... both great singers... apples and oranges... some careers take off in different directions. Lara's sound is placed further back ( someone in the comments said "suffocated" which is tad extreme LoL ) Céline is way more French Canadian and her sound is much more forward and resonates more through the nose... but, MY POINT, I don't believe in "theories" of people of having so much power as to Stop or Slow Down another artist's career. I do love them both for different reasons .... and they really are nice... I actually worked on a show with Lara and met Céline on many occasions through mutual friends/ co workers... Let's not pit them against each other... let appreciate their uniquenesses :-)

Her tone on mid belts is definitely super similar to Celine's! I don't think it's a French thing though, it's probably more so the fact that Lara has said that Celine is her biggest inspiration vocally. She surpassed her in terms of technique though. I've never really heard Lara strain or drop support, she's not very known, but most of the people that do know about her, consider her one of the best belters music has ever seen. I can't say I disagree. Apart from her technique being objectively better than Celine's, I also personally find her a more interesting artist. The way she can emote like no other just pulls me in. Not discrediting Celine though, she's obviously a good vocalist who left her mark on the music industry for a reason.

But that's a bit weird you know, she could've been inspired by Celine but I thought that they had their inspiration from Barbra Streisand tho🤔 the looooong belting, support, control, dramatical performances is kinda Barbra's thing actually. The thing about Celine being her inspiration are her words, not mine, but I'm sure she wasn't her only inspiration. Celine doesn't resonate higher than Lara does though. Celine tends to support up to Eb5/E5 consistently, so we've rarely heard her resonate any higher than that because unsupported notes can't be resonant.

BTW - I do know a little Italian and can tell you that when she sings "Te Voglio Bene Sai" it means I love you so much. I completely agree that they do NOT sound the same. Lara and Celine have different time and quality to their voices. Celine has more of a nasal power belt. Lara takes advantage of musical dynamics much more. I love them both. I prefer Lara's song selection. But I'd be able to pick them out with my eyes closed in a heartbeat. I am glad to see America finally taking note of Lara Fabian.

Celine does not always have a nasal kind of voice, it seems like people only know her one song that is simply overated, like 9/10 of her songs are sung with much clarity. Celine can sing distorted, clear, dark, nasal, raspy and even growly.Both Lara, Celine and many French, French Canadian singers have a similar technique based on classical singing.The note Lara made right before he said that they sound similar was exactly how Celine does her ''hey'' vowel and it DOES sound like it.

Mathieu Lizotte I agree on some points and was only giving my quick preference between the two singers. I’m a music educator and professor; I know the differences in style. I have listened to Celine and Lara since they started and can hear what both voices are capable of. I certainly don’t base my opinion on ONE Celine song. Overall, yes, French stylistic singing is more nasal in sound. And if you compare the two voices, they both have that quality. I personally feel that Lara handles the nasal tone a little better. That does not detract from Celine and her abilities, particularly her amazing power ballads and ability to sing beautifully and airy. For those, I give the edge to Celine. Lara seems to be a little more “talkative” and communicative when she sings. I love her fall offs on phrases; particularly in Je Taime or Caruso. All in all, it comes down to preference when comparing these two very similar voices. In my opinion🎶

Try accessing the website "lyrics translate" and you'll find the English words to her foreign language songs. She knows several languages. She also sings in Italian which is the language of "Caruso" . The Chorus "Te voglio bene saie" means "I love you so much." (Don't test me on the spelling - I'm of Italian heritage, but was born and raised in my beloved America. Lara's voice is real perfection. I'm pleased that you feel that way as well.

Celine is a showman. She loves showing off her stratospheric range and her vicious runs up and down her register. Her power may be the greatest of all the pop Sopranos. Listen to her sing with Il Divo, and the Canadian Tenors on the Oprah show(who did not know she was there-Oprah invited her in secret so she could surprise them b/c 1. she is also Canadian and 2. they had never sung with her before). Dion overpowered both of them!! Lara is a far more emotional singer than Celine, although Dion can certainly sing with emotion(especially after her husband died at such a young age). Lara also competed against Celine in the 1988 Eurovision song contest. Celine won while Lara's song sold over 500,000 copies in Europe.
