Love this pond. Love the clever use of plants for filtration. It’s nice to see plants being used as lot of koi ponds are really bare. Koi look stunning 🙌🏻

I totally agree, smart setup for the plants which is working very well. Water quality is very well and stable. And yes, this pond owner shows that it surely is possible to combine plants with Koi!

I gave your video the 110th Like. 😊👍 Thankyou very much for sharing. See you in the next video. Have a great week. Stay safe and take care.

I heard some of what you said, But can you explain EXACTLY how this is done, is it just the liner, then the grids are rested on something to create a gap under the grid of just water flow, Then the plants are just placed into the grid with no mud ? and held down with gravel ? and the roots hang freely under the grid ? what stops the gravel from falling through the grid ? how bigger holes are in the grid ? and what plants are best for nitrites etc ?

What happens in winter when the plants die back? Or is this somewhere tropical or with warm winters?
@Aboutkoi Жыл бұрын
Cold winters: the plants will indeed all die. The water is still maintained though because of all the bacteria that are in the filters. Also amount of feeding is near to zero in winter time, meaning there is not much impact on the water quality.

Could you please explain in detail how the plant filtration is done. I'm terribly curious and want to try it as well.

Hopefully I will visit this pond later this year again. Perhaps we can make a nice video again of how the filtration system works here!

That’s such an amazing setup, it’s great to see such big healthy Koi without tens of thousands of euros spent on pumps, filtration and controls! At that size pond, you would not normally stock more than 12 full-size Koi, not without serious filters. It looks like there are more than that in the pond? Did the owner discuss water changes?
@Aboutkoi3 жыл бұрын
That is indeed very, very true. The water quality of this pond is managed very well with this setup. Even better then some 'high-tech' ponds with drum filters and such. The question is, is it actually needed to invest that much in filtration systems, or are there other good ways to maintain good water quality. And yes, this pond has more Koi, i've seen probably like 25. I'm quite sure it can manage 25 Koi with a size of 70+ cm, when looking at the current water levels. The owner mentioned he does do some water changes, but not weekly, only once in a while without a standard rhytm.
@garethbaker34293 жыл бұрын
That’s amazing, 25 Koi in 43m3 with just plants. I would love to see is anyone has managed a similar setup with Anoxic filtration!

Question: how do you catch a koi in such a large pond if you want for example to do a skin scrape? I ask because I have a 25,000L pond and I need to do this as I have a koi showing symptoms which could be parasites! It's impossible!
@Aboutkoi3 жыл бұрын
Hi there, in ponds of this size, it is still doable. You will need a Koi net of 250 / 300 cm with a ~70-80 cm diameter net. Key is to move the Koi net gently and slowly. If you catch Koi more often, you will start to understand that most Koi have the same swimming behaviour when you try to catch them. You will just have to anticipate and be one step ahead. Usually they swim away and then 'turn' around in the other direction. At that moment you just have to make sure you move your net gently in the right direction. Good luck! (and maybe I will create a video later how to do this gently)
@missvmartin65713 жыл бұрын
@@Aboutkoi Thanks. I don't think my net is quite that long. Quite worried about my fish right now, nitrite was high but now back on border of green/amber zones on ProScan testing (ammonia really low) and could be normal again now (have been doing water changes but water pressure here is very low for filling so it's slow - using a dechlorinator of course). First just the one older koi (not sure of age, I inherited him from property vendors) - since which time I've been around the pond a lot doing things like vaccuming but not feeding - and for sure it's colder weather today - but they are all subdued and tending to stay near the bottom. New fish arrived a week ago but dealer should be reputable, I was pretty careful. I have a better microscope arriving tomorrow and have borrowed some waders ... seine net only available for delivery end of next week.

Is there any chance you can explain how the plant filter is made?
@Aboutkoi2 жыл бұрын
Hi there, as far as I know this pond owner makes use of grids that are used in a piggery/swinery. He uses about 1-2 inch of gravel on top of the grids. In that small layer of grid the plants are placed. below teh grid, there is at least 10 up to 20 inch space for the roots to grow. Hope that helps a bit. Perhaps we can have a closer look later at this setup!

Could you upload this without the music filler?
@Aboutkoi3 жыл бұрын
Sorry, no. Is it too loud?
@puirYorick3 жыл бұрын
@@Aboutkoi Not really loudness. Just unnecessary. The natural water sound of the pond is beautiful by itself. Having a random musical interlude seems a strange surplus to me when the subject is a beautiful garden pond with koi. I merely state my preference but accept the ultimate choice is your own.
