LARGE Lathe Restoration

Today we welcome a new machine. The American Pacemaker Lathe. There was a day not too long ago when I first I wanted a metal lathe. Once I was lucky enough to get one I set my sights on a bigger lathe so I could make some bigger projects. Thats where this new lathe comes in. Taking a much different approach on this restoration/refresh, I focused mostly on function and less on aesthetics. My hope was to get this up and running to start making stuff instead of it sitting around for a year in a million pieces. Be on the lookout for more intense restorations to come but until then enjoy.

I spent most of the 80’s working for American Tool Works. It’s great to see the old machines get new life. I am prejudiced, but I always thought we made great machines. Great job on refurbishing this fine old lathe.

Yeah those monarchs are great, that’s what I was looking for but this American is super beefy. I really like it just wish it was a little bit longer

@@VanoverMachineAndRepair that American I think it definitely out weighs the series 61 like I have mine is a 16x54 but will swing 20” (8,980 Lbs.) the headstock is nowhere near as big as that American and the carriage isn’t as beefy either

Fantastic restoration Kyle. I don’t know where you get your motivation. I’m still working on my Colchester MK1 lol. You’re giving Adam B. a run for his money; that thing is a beast! Have you checked runout at the head bearings? I’m wondering if anything that big even moves?

Thank you. The head stock bearings on that lathe easily adjustable. You can do it without even removing the headstock cover. But I did check the bearings and they’re nice and tight
