When I met my wife, she knew nothing about cars. She appreciated that I did and when her Rover 25 died, I suggested that we get her something she could enjoy owning and driving on her terms, so she went for a Fig. She's still her own kind of petrol head after a succession of Smarts and I love that.

I'm pretty sure these are so popular in the UK simply because of the retro styling. I think Nissan did a convincing job too - it's quite timeless considering they're 30 years old, a classic in it's own right!
@markbennett66583 жыл бұрын
You’ve got to consider the time period as well when these were released. There were a lot of very dull grey looking boxes in the early ‘90s. Nissan tried really hard with the Figaro and it is evocative of 50s French & Italian small cars. Like you say it’s timeless reliable and cheap to run. The rub is the lack of parts availability as Jonny Smith attests to with his!

You know, its funny - when the figaro came out, I thought the same as you - it was a 'fake classic' - a modern car designed to look like a much older one. Now of course they're solidly thirty years old and I guess that makes 'em genuine classic cars! Not my bag at all, I have no desire to ever own one, but I do appreciate what Nissan did, and although I don't share the enthusiasm of Figaro fans, I do understand it!

Bought one three years ago because I love the shape, and thought it would be rubbish to drive, but it's actually really good. Up in the high revs it is rather quick, due to the turbo, but it IS slow in low revving city traffic. Made a video with it last year on my YT channel also. Economy is rather bad, compared to a regular small Japanese car, due to small wheels, high revving engine (4000 RPM at 100 km/h), turbo and the wasteful automatic transmission. So it drinks gasoline like a medium sized car from the seventies. But it is always a lot of fun to drive, so that doesn't really matter. And I know the feeling, you are trying to describe. Would also consider myself a petrolhead with a 356 and a Citroën DS among my other cars. Gave one of my cruising friends in an E-type quite a surprise earlier this year, when suddenly I floored it and kickdowned past him in the Fig on one of our trips 😎

Same with the Daihatsu Copen, which one might argue to be the descendant of the Figaro, which wasn't as appreciated as it should have by car enthusiasts, probably because it didn't sport any muscle in its looks. In Japan they don't care as much about reputation and looking serious to others as we do, and the fact many of their best cars look really cute and expressive is proof of that. Daihatsu sold the Copen in EU with their usual 1.3L but retired altogether from the continent in '14, just in time before the new Copen was released. Now in Japan they sell three variants of it, the Robe which is angry looking, the GR which is the spicier Robe, and the Cero, which is the sweetest looking car on sale right now, go check it. Every time I see a Copen I would really like to drive it on a sweeping country road, because it promises joy just by looking at it.

I got one for my wife many years ago - I drove it more than she did, I think. That roof is a work of art. Also fairly nice inside except for the rather drab and hard dash and a bit of scuttle shake. My missus has a Daihatsu Copen. I'm just a smidge under 6' 2" and I drive it. If I'm at a set of lights and almost any other car pulls up next to me, it's the Copen that gets the looks and the smiles. Especially from the ladies. I'd like to have said it was me, but at 60, I'm not so sure now. It's a cracking little car too. had a tiny 1,200 Toyota engine. So that won't go wrong. It's a tidy little handler and corners on rails. With the roof down on a warm summers day, you can't beat it. And when the roof is down, even if a Porsche pulls up next to you, the little Copen will definitely get more looks and smiles.

Other places where you will find it are the 3 chrome spokes on the steering wheel. As for the suspension it is unforgiving if you do not replace it, so on your model that must have been the case, but it should be otherwise very confortable.

The way it looked was what made the figaro unique; the only similar-looking car I can think of is the little-known and even tinier Autobianchi bianchina of the late 1950s, a Fiat 500-offshoot. Looking back, you could say Nissan was on to something with their pike factory-cars (be-1, pao, figaro and S-cargo), as they preceded European and American retro-design by some 10 years, but with a different approach. Whereas European retro-cars where modern interpretations of a classic icon, the figaro looked like a 1960-design that Nissan belatedly introduced in 1990, but based on the then current micra (assuming the Autobianchi wasn't the car they tried to recreate). To good effect though, because I can't feel anything but warmth for it. I like the term car enthusiast more than "petrolhead" as to me, the latter always implies some narrow-mindedness: as if you are only allowed to admire or enjoy very powerful or rugged cars. Maybe it's just me.
