We, sailors are colder than the sea and bigger than the waves.

Yep! I fished commercially for about 23 seasons, and as I got older, the PTSD started one night as I was trying to sleep to ocean and camp fire sounds. But the only thing I could think of was boat - waves- shore and rocks. It sounds crazy but at 12 years old, I got to watch the Kodiak King tugboat pull out the lifeless body of a woman who had drowned the night before in heavy seas. I had just spent the night from about 2 a.m. until around 5 a.m. listening to the Coast Guard and other boats call for the F/V Deep Sea. It had called in a mayday, but it was heard by only the ferry vessel Tustumena. They had been traveling only about 5 minutes ahead of them. They could not risk even turning around for them because of the storm. Our boat had anchored up to wait out the storm. We were only two hours away by boat, but just a few miles from us by crow. The next day was flat calm, and the sun was shining in a cloudless sky. I saw the toy blocks from one of her two small children. There had been two women and three children hitching a ride back into town as the 1976 salmon was wrapping up. Other boats were also picking up debris from the Deep Sea, including a 14' Sears aluminum skiff. I had spent most of the night awake listening to the events on the radio. There were many more nights to come listening to stricken vessels calling for help. A couple we even rescued and towed to town. You'd be amazed at how accurate a C130 can drop a pump to a vessel in a flyby. But then I think back to my first year fishing, and there was gun play of boat shooting at boat, vessels and skiffs getting rammed and numerous fist fights that made for good storytelling at the galley table that night and the many other times that followed. Cutthroat fishing at its best. I wouldn't see that again until the mid 90's. Yep, there were many evenings that the radio kept our ears listening to the voices on the radio in distress. Too many if you ask me, and so many close calls myself. In the end, I took notice of what the cosmos was saying. Some day, your luck is going run out.

@@nippon2003 LOL! I'm in Portland Oregon and we have a Rose Festival every year. It used to be lit! Sailors would come from all over, their ships lining the seawall, right downtown! I worked as a cocktail waitress, and I loved when the sailors came. They tipped good, and flirted, making my nights fun and profitable. Also prostitutes would come from all over. There was a phone line, Dial-a- Sailor! Then covid messed up everything...😔 but it used to be fun. I learned their tattoos, which ones were merchant seamen, or Navy...sometimes a fight would break out and I would hide behind the bar...good times, good times...🌹⚓

The first time I went abroad as a kid, we took a 6 hour overnight channel crossing from Southampton. There was a thunderstorm and the sea was rough. People inside were suffering!! I got outside onto the starboard covered walkway, partly protected by a heavy plastic storm door, found a deckchair, put a blanket over myself and spent the night there. It was wonderful!

I've spent 15 yrs on a 45ft. Number 1 key West haul. Longlining for sword fish. Out of Florida. To the 31 line. Brings back memories. Actually I miss it. As frustrating it was and sometimes scared to death.
