This is a beautiful example of why the rest of the world was so envious of British film-making. So well composed with equal amounts of bitter-sweetness and comedy. Beautifully filmed, great acting and lovely music to go with it.

I have a friend who lives in San Francisco, he was visiting a while back and whilst watching our TV programmes he described it them as total class, the difference he said was stark whilst the variety of our programming was delightful and quality to it's core, we can at least get something right here but really having been subjected to Netflix over lockdown I crave the calm surrounding of series from the 70's and 80's.

@@kevinbaird7277 British film and TV is def better than American - as an American who grew up watching programs from other countries I find British film so much better that I haven’t seen American TV in about 15 years. I often recommend a film/series to someone who hasn’t seen any or much British TV and they are always impressed!!

lf you do keep chicken for real (and not just making a funny avatar related joke) l sincerely hope your animals won't be victimized by the dreaded bird-flu, like they are here on the mainland. l cannot tell you how my heart cries when l hear about the clearing of thousends of little chicks (l certainly won't watch any of the videobites on the news) with the use of bloody woodchippers! Guess now it's waiting for the next "madcow" epidemic, ugh, mainly for the disgusting way the bio-industry is abusing animals for fast profit. Sorry for the rant, l was only going to wish you and your chickens good health but then l couldn't help myself.. :)

I love it when movies begin with an overview of the town following the one, lone postman (or sometimes it's a newspaper boy, throwing newspapers) and the harmonica is playing as the individual follows his route down a sun-dappled, tree-lined street and housewives step out on the stoop to get the paper (not the milk anymore) in a close -knit (oh! so many hyphenations) hometown community....the music in this intro reminds me of Steel Magnolias.

Brilliant. The story is brilliant because it is true. Mail is delivered by bike in most countries I've visited. The US is an exception, and postmen there regularly die from MI's due to sedentary jobs. And the post there is insolvent for paying for gas powered vehicles. It's true also because you meet interesting people on a bike, not in a shiny new car. The paparazzi, the Colombo cop, and all the rest are also brilliant story parts. How did I miss this? The Missing Postman (TV Movie 1997) - imdb 7.6 Clive Peacock is a postman in a small seaside town in Dorset. He's happy in his job and doesn't want it to change. But new technology is being introduced in his sorting office. Since he can't drive, and since deliveries by bicycle are deemed to be "old fashioned", he is offered early retirement. But he doesn't want to retire. On his last day, he collects the post from the pillar box... and decides to deliver it by hand himself as a protest. And so he starts out on a long journey by bike all around Britain, delivering each letter personally. He is hotly pursued by the police (who want to arrest him for "stealing Her Majesty's mail") and by the media (who see a great human interest story and turn him into a celebrity). But he manages to stay one step ahead of them, making many friends along the way.
