I’ve had many safaris in the Kruger park but we were always mindful and respected the animals, and never tried to be like that guy with a tiny car, leaving his window open to take a pic! We once had a herd of elephants so up close, , touching our car with his trunk, which was beautiful but at the same time also scary! Such gracious animals!

It's my understanding that lions are very,very quick and have great leaping abilities. I think I can imagine a scenario in which someone in one of those cars is eating a roast beef sandwich...with the window open...and a lioness,with her amazing sense of smell,gets a whiff of it and *boom* she's half way through the open window thinking there's a dead impala in there. Of course I could be wrong! :-)

It has been explained that the lion sees humans as being part of a bigger being, the car. It isn't until the person gets out of the car that they see him or her as an individual being. The tourist vehicles are literally open, and the guide sits on a seat at the edge of the vehicle. If an elephant attacks, it attacks the vehicle and doesn't pull people from the car.

I live in black bear country. I stopped to look at 4 cubs playing in a trash pail. I was looking toward the passenger side of the car. Thank goodness I had my windows closed. Mom, a huge sow, was right at my drivers window. Her nose was right on the glass…..it was twice the size of my fist. I drove away carefully. Never open your window near a wild animal. They move faster than we can blink.
