Nice summary Couple of small nitpicks: 1. DA:O released in 2009 so Bioware decided to work on their own fantasy IP way before 2012. Losing WoTC license and wanting to create their own IP are facts, but it wasn't in 2012 (that the year of the release of infamous DA2). 2. Larian created DOS1 and was about to release and then pitched to WoTC. DOS1 was basically a part of pitch strategy. And WoTC approached Larian right before DOS2 launch. Maybe I'm wrong tho, I might be wrong Also, worth mention, however, that's not a nitpick, that “during” D2:Ego Draconis dev and release they were still working with publishers who were rushing the game as well, while Larian asked for more time to polish (from documentaries about DOS1-2). I don't know if that was the last game they had a publisher or not, but certainly one of the last ones.

Hey thanks for taking the time to watch and send such detailed notes! Yeah you are right! In some instances I’m sure I made a decision to explain it in a way where it seems slightly more dramatic than the reality like already having DOS1 already in the works etc! Some bits there I didn’t know however so thank you! Glad you enjoyed the summary, thanks again for watching!

Tbf divinity ego draconis released because the publishers wanted it to release early. Swen wanted the release date to be pushed but they were ultimately rushed to release and that's why they got rid of publishers for their new games.

One important thing to consider, in the end, is that our take on life in Europe and that in english speaking countries, mostly the USA, are very different. Profits matter obviously, but this is not the most important thing in life. Working to earn the money you need to live decently, and living for the sake of earning more, are at the opposite sides of the spectrum. People in Europe overall do not dream of becoming a millionnaire. In Belgium, official languages are Dutch and French. As such, the mindset is closer to that of the Netherland's and France's. There are MASSIVE cultural differences between europeans and USAns, that most in the USA absolutely don't see. And parts of the things you talk about feel weird when you are the one talking about it. For example, there is nothing strange in betting everything on one game. It is common sense at this point. Partly because we have a proper social net that means we won't lose any so-called 'benefit' even if we bankrupt, but partly because dreams are not something for sale, too. Which is why Larian stated they are not for sale. And why CD Projekt was not for sale. And actually the majority of companies that are not in the UK (the UK is very much like the USA). What is the point in compromising? Compromises are made for the sake of shareholders, this is losing one's freedom. This is the same reason why Larian creates free DLCs and loads of content through patches instead of making people pay for it. This is why i wasn't surprised when i found out that Obsidian and InXile ended up selling themselves to Microsoft, despite everything they had stated on publishers. That only happens in the USA. Mindsets are everything, even in business. And the way they would have handled this if they were in Japan or China is bound to be very different, again.
