The worse nuclear power plant accident in US history happened 12 days after this movie was released. A reactor at Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania had a partial meltdown. That timing really gave this movie relevance at the time.

Yep! I was 15 at the time and marched in no nukes protests. The pathology of greed (what this film’s really about, imo) is always topical because it’s been around since god knows when, and will always be with us.

I usually watch this movie in a double bill with Capricorn One (1978). They have a similar pacing and it just feels right to watch them together.

Enjoyed your reaction Larissa, haven't watched this movie in many years & your's is the first reaction I have seen on the film. The power & influence big money has on our society is probably one of the scarier aspects of the film. Today, with the consolidation of news networks into basically monopolies its even harder to get real facts about anything that effects our lives.

The slow pace of this movie is typical for this genre of movies in the 70s. I remember a different ending where the meltdown was immanent at the very end. I can't seem to find any reference to any alternate ending. Perhaps I'm remembering a different movie.

Can’t vouch for an alternative ending, but agree with your observation about the pace being of the era; before the internet; before video games and MTV, etc. At this time American television stations ended programming for the evening at midnight with the star spangled banner swelling. I’m not one to say universally “times were better” back then, but they were very different. Probably as unimaginable to young ppl today as the 1930s would be to me. I was born in 1965.

In a previous video she mentioned she’d had surgery of some kind, and that it (I think/hope temporarily) paralyzed one side of her face. I’m guessing it’s Bell’s palsy, which isn’t serious.

If movies actually had that kind of power and impact it's a surprise we are still fighting wars. The nuclear industry did a good enough job of "killing" itself by showing through multiple incidents that it's a bad idea to have an industry like this be run with a profits before safety mindset.

The nuclear "industry" was made up totally by political policy. There was never any economic basis for it.

Three Mile Island happened just after this film was made, which was key. For my part I say good riddance to the nuclear power industry, for it’s 1000 year radioactive waste and the good ol’ “1% principle.”
