Larry Adler, one of the best on the harmonica in the world!

Larry as one of the world's most skilled harmonica players. Ralph Vaughan Williams, Malcolm Arnold, Darius Milhaud and Arthur Benjamin composed for him. During his later career he collaborated with Sting, Elton John, Kate Bush and Cerys Matthews.

I saw him at the Jazz Cafe on his 80th birthday tour. In between the music were lots of stories about people he hung out with including George Gershwin and Al Capone. One of the best gigs I've been to.

My dad played the chromatic to Larry's records (and Toots's too) all my young life. He knew harmonica well enough, having played since high school during the deep depression, when simple harmonicas were one the few affordable instruments to make up a school band. He also played in the service on national radio during WW2 as a guest on the army air corps' radio hour, but declined a regular gig on the USO tour, which he felt was dishonorable while others were dying in Europe and the Pacific. Instead, he was a weather man and pilot instructor. He told me once that he asked himself, what would he tell his future children when they ask, Dad, what did you do in the War? Jim Reilley, this is for you.

Had the Pleasure of Meeting him at Tower Records when his CD of Gershwin was released, my friend phoned me, I shot down there straight away, not really anyone there, was good for me, had a chat, told him I had problems getting of his recordings, He said, he couldn’t either & if I did get any, let him know 😂 I got a Signed Photo ( Prized Possession ) & he Signed the CD When he died, loads was released .

Chromatic harp’s are hard to master. Diatonic takes years of playing to become pro, much less get a chromatic. This is bright and fitting. Very nice.

One of a kind! However, his comment about Stevie Wonder was very misleading, as Stevie, like Larry, mostly plays the chromatic and doesn't play blues, as Larry implied; actually Bob Dylan doesn't play blues either. Anyway, RIP, Larry.

He also plays diatonic. Listen to his original recording of "Boogie On Reggae Woman". It's all blow and blow bends on the top octave of an Ab major diatonic. Yes, he has played the same tune, live, with chromatic, too, as seen in at least two clips on YT.
