In the 60s, at least on the east coast that I know of, it was the age of the great organ combos and it's such a joy to hear it alive and kickin' now but on the highest level, all around!!! Three masters of their respective "axes" who are great composers and leader individually but remarkably, they smoothly blend and fuse into a well-oiled music machine of superb sonic brilliance...WHEW!!!!!!!

One of the best organ-guitar trios on the scene now or any time as far as I'm concerned. All three of these guys are giants on their instruments and I can't say enough about this. Those who feel it's necessary to avoid playing so-called "Straight ahead" should take their lessons from this. You can be fresh and hip and still swing and play changes! ' My hat's off to this great trio!
@oddskarberg96758 жыл бұрын
I agree with everything you say about this amazing trio. Gigants! Let me just add, that Goldings is a skilled bass player as well. The way he improvises, while he keeps the whole ensembelt together with feets and left hand - a great achievement. He is also a great jazz pianist; Listen to last album with John Schofield - Country for old men. Keep on swinging - in that trilling, intelligent way!

Same group as on Bill Stewart's 1st solo outing on Blue Note, called "Snide Remarks". Brilliant trio. These guys just blend with each other so well. I notice Bill isn't using his famous hand-hammered brass Ludwig snare. No matter, it still has Bill's unmistakable tone. The groove is so deep it puts me in a trance. Big fan of Larry and Peter as well. Top notch NY jazzers. Doesn't get any better.

Somebody stole the volume! LOL. This is a killer trio-A total favorite! Though we know the difficulties of live recording, this was done by WBGO @ the Vanguard, so I assume a good engineer was on hand. But before mastering for KZbin, it seems nobody checked the VU meters (old school term lol). Just because they’re color coded now, doesn’t mean “make sure nothing hits Red”. A few DB peaks above Red on the meters (especially on louder tunes) IS the standard for digital, (& distortion is nil). This great performance is barely audible. Something I miss about mastering for vinyl and CD was you had to conform to one of the “rainbow book” standards (orange, red, etc). These ran the spectrum (pun!) from eq’ing to standardized volume across media. Now that everyone’s a “*home engineer”: standards have vanished. *Definition: “One who buys a lot of cool looking gear, but doesn’t use the best equipment they own: Their EARS!” 😂 Ok, I’ve ranted enough! It’s in the “Van Gelder” genome 🙂 No doubt from my late uncle Rudy. I just wish he or I had mastered this. :-} What a smoking band! Cheers. TVG.
