Bird played each game like it was his last. That's why his body broke down too soon. If he played in today's league, he'd dominate the game.

Yup - I remember and that's where he got the black eye. There was a place across from the original Garden and it was a slit of a bar and always low-priced beer and usually trouble. This is well known.

A time in history when real men played the game as it was meant to be played... A true battle of blood and pride. Not like the pussy ass game they play today, players get sent off just for talking to the crowd these days.

Bill Laimbeer was the dirtiest player in the NBA back then. He didn't try to just foul you, he was out to hurt you. He had to have police escorts to make it out of various cities. IMO he should've been kicked out of the league.

I agree! Even back then, when the guys did scuffle a lot, Bill Laimbeer, was on a another level, and should have maybe been a boxer instead, although, I think he would play dirty in that sport too, that's just who he was......An A"hole in every way!!!

At 14:45ish - That huge pile in the middle of the floor started with Danny Ainge _C_ taking Tree Rollins _Hawks_ to the floor to avoid punches flying, I think. In the middle of that wrestling match Tree bit Ainge's finger. He had to leave the game to get stitches, if I remember correctly. The pile that we see came from teammates trying to separate the two. Next day's sports headline actually read TREE BITES MAN

The coach who starts going after Larry at around the 4:45 mark was the 76ers coach, Billy Cunningham, who was a pretty good coach and a very good player in his day - and also not someone who backed down, either. Laimbeer was one of the dirtiest players ever. A a Knicks fan, we also hated his guts. About the only classy guy on that Piston team was Joe Dumars. I almost felt sorry for him that he had to play with such a classless bunch.

In that one fight, Ralph Sampson (7’4”) of the Houston Rockets started throwing punches at Celtics “short guy” Jerry Sichting (6’1”) out of frustration - a rather uneven fight… so that’s when Larry came and threw Sampson down.

Sampson _Rocket_ (7'4") punched Sichting _Celtic_ (6'1") then DJ _C_ (6'4") stepped in and Sampson punched him cutting him near his eye at which point Walton _C_ (6'11") took Sampson to the floor. The rest of that was essentially about separating everybody. It happened in Game 5 of the 1986 Finals in Houston. Sampson was ejected. The next game in the series was in Boston.

Larry hated Bill Laimbeer. He said you could get into fights with other players, but Bill Laimbeer was always out to hurt people. When they jumped, he would put a foot underneath where they came down so they would turn their ankle. He was the dirtiest of the Detroit Pistons bad boys. These were the days when basketball was really exciting to watch. It got rough and sometimes the refs let them play rough. I can’t watch it today… Nobody plays in the paint, everybody’s trying to make threes, nobody goes for rebounds. And they sit out for a week if they break a nail. Soft basketball.

What happened with the fight where y'all saw Larry coming over? That was the Finals playoffs against the Rockets and the big guy was 7'4" Ralph Sampson would has been mismatched against Celtics player Sichting, standing at only 6'1" ... A full 15 inches shorter than Ralph. For NO reason, while down in the paint, he threw two viscous punches at Sichting and THAT is what precipitated this scuffle. Thankfully, ole Ralphie boy got himself ejected for that little shenanigan! 🤬🤬🤬

I've heard stories of Bird getting into fist fights at bars which puzzles me since I have no idea who wants to square up against a 6'10" professional athlete.... Plus, Bird grew up poor in rural Indiana, he's openly talked about living and learning in an old-school environment where you had to fight to handle problems, and as tough as he was, when the Pistons were throwing elbows and doing grimy shit to take him out of the game, that's when he got heated enough to throw hands. Otherwise, he welcomed the physicality and gauntlet of 80's NBA basketball.

Larry was a fighter. He was known to fight in bars too. He hated Lambeer from the Pistons. Says he was a dirty player. That tall player in gold he was arguing with was Kareem Abdul Jabbar. And the player in red was Dr. J. (Julius Irving). Larry was taunting him with the score 38-6. Larry had 38 points to Dr. J’s 6. And that’s when Dr. J swung at him. Barkley held him while Dr. J punched him but they’re cool now.

"Where they playin' at? A football stadium?" Yes. The Detroit Pistons played at the Pontiac Silverdome, same as the Detroit Lions. Several teams have done this. The Houston Rockets have played games at the Astrodome. The Seattle SuperSonics at the Kingdome. The New Orleans Jazz at the Superdome. The Toronto Raptors at the SkyDome (Now Rogers Centre). In college, the Syracuse Orange play basketball at the JMA Dome. As for the video quality: First, it's about 480i to start with. Then, most of these are probably sourced from VHS. VHS started off holding about two hours of video, but then they would do things to extend the recording times, at the cost of lower quality. Add in that some of these may be copies of copies and/or were poorly tuned analog channels to begin with when recorded--both of which lowers the quality even more--and this is what you end up with.

I have never been a basketball fan, but living in Boston it was a very exciting time watching Bird. Rumor was that Bird would get in to a lot of fights in the local bars. Some he won most he lost. He did have a reputation of being an asshole, but one of the greatest basketball players of all time.

Yeah, Dr. J had been throwing elbows all night at Larry, and every time Larry came down the court, he would compare their points. “37 to 6“. Dr. J had about enough and gave him an elbow, and Larry went after him. But you are right. Larry got one shot in and Moses Malone and Charles Barkley held his arms while Dr. J punched him .

I miss the days when players were real men. Not crying over turn overs or getting carried out on a stretched for a strain. Yea, it was more violent but it was still better than this baby proof bs the league is today. If you were not literally knocked out you got up and continued playing. Broken bones would be a valid reason too but even that didnt stop some players back then. Larry was one of them. Isiah, as much as I hated that guy, was a tough, tenacious litte bastard too, played almost a full quarter with a fractured ankle. Credit where credit is due, the guy was a warrior. All of them were, or you wouldnt cut it.
