Have been crazy about Larry Kert since I first discovered my parent's West Side Story album and proceeded to act it out in my living room for years. Listening to his voice soaring up to those high notes, the passion, the gentleness... I have never heard a voice like that since. Love seeing him here.

I only just discovered that recording of WSS in the last week. I resisted it for years because I couldn't imagine it would be better than the movie soundtrack. Not even in the ballpark. Those VOICES. And every one of the Jets SOUNDS like a rough gang member. Kert is absolutely extraordinary. No one can sing like that now because they are all miked, and their voices don't develop the same way.

THANK YOU so much for posting this video! Larry Kert may be today one of the lesser-known Broadway stars but he was among the most talented and ground-breaking of his generation. In this interview, you can just sense all the emotion and excitement and possibility that is just under his surface, all of which bursts forth beautifully, passionately in the song he performs. Larry Kurt--now gone, but not forgotten. On a somewhat different note: the intellectual exchange, tact, and talent on display in this interview really make today's talk shows look like cheap, staged nothings.

If only he'd done the movie. (Sorry, Richard Beymer. I like you, but...)

Beymer got the role because of his looks. He didn't sing. Neither did Tamblyn. Neither did Wood.
