Larry's been painting over graffiti in Los Angeles for 20 years. We wanted to see what his L.A. looked like, so we rode around with him in his truck.

Tom, you continue to amaze me with these GREAT videos!!! In graffiti art culture, Larry and his kin are labeled as the "buff". That's the slang term in graff culture for people who paint over graffiti. Joe Conolly (the "Graffiti Guerilla") was probably one of the most notorious buffs we've ever seen. Look him up! He's reached legendary status within the L.A. graffiti scene. Hate to say it, but I used to hate seeing my tags get painted over by these guys! Hahaha, those were the good old days. Stuff doesn't run as long as it used to anymore. Keep up the great work, man!

This was a good one. I'm sure there are tons of other thankless jobs that could be featured. Other perspectives of the city. This is pretty interesting. This guy can't be mad about graffiti. It's what keeps him in business..

Larry is a real hero. I wonder how he matches the colors of each space he has to paint? (He must mix them on site?) And, Larry, bacon & eggs is NOT unhealthy for you...enjoy!

I like this video and agree graffiti is not appropriate in all places. However, graffiti can be art as well and keep "the city looking nice." There are several graffiti artists in that area of the city. Larry's job is important and essential, but it is important to understand the importance of street art as well. Especially the importance of street art in specific neighborhoods. I remember when LA MOCA did a whole piece on the histories of LA Graffiti artists. Graffiti is a part of the culture of LA.

Love, love, love this! We are so used to hearing the taggers point of view on these circumstances but we often fail to realize that those who are employed to wash over the graffiti are just normal people too, struggling to make money like the rest of us. Great perspective!

i can see why tagging is hated by the general public (even though there is an art to writing a name..) but MAYBE instead of covering beautiful works of art with dull grey paint like the citys seem to like to do, with permission artists could COVER the sides of the buildings instead and do it fucking legally.. then theres less people tagging because there would be beautiful legal walls everywhere..

I hate seeing taggings because they are not artistic. I would not mind if it actually looked beautiful like some graffiti does, but it doesn't. There is this mural on Hoover walk that looks absolutely gorgeous; it is of this flying eye with a city on top of it, but sometimes I see tagging on it and it just breaks my heart. Like what are these people thinking? Why are they putting their peace of Shit tag on actual art. I don't know how but the tagging usually gets removed which is weird because you can't paint over a mural.
@bornsavages7619
@bornsavages7619 8 жыл бұрын
the tag is the rawest most basic form of graffiti... it all STARTED with tagging, and then developed thicker and more colourful over years and years of many artist work.. understanding how letters flow together is what MAKES those beautiful murals you are talking about... if a graffiti artist doesnt have a nice handstyle hes not a good graffiti artist, simple as that.

Cool video. So improving and fixing up your neighborhood and making it look nice is not gentrification? But but but...all those stop gentrification groups are lying? Gasp!

Highland Park (in LA ) is trash. I grew up there in the late 80's and most of the 90's. I moved out of that town when i finished high school in 99. Never been back there since.

+H Santiago Would you be surprised if I told you that Highland Park is becoming one of the most hipster "trendy" places to live in LA right now? Along with Echo Park, it's been extremely gentrified. It's nothing like it used to be in the 90's and early 2000's.

+H Santiago not jealous of that...it was rough to say the least. But at least now some people are able to sell and make a small fortune for having to put up with gang warfare for 20 years

Extremely gentrified might be pushing it. There's pockets of hipsterization and those will probably get bigger, but most of Highland Park looks the same as it has for years.
