Larry, the mustang: Free Acceptance of the Rider (Episode 2) When Horses Choose in the USA

Larry is a 5 years old mustang who had been auctioned and previously gentled. His owners have 2 other horses and they all live as a herd, and they give them a pretty good life with love and care. They love to go on trail rides on the desert and mountais, but Larry is very strong and gives them a hard time when ridden bitless -he runs off.
On Episode 1, Mia connected with Larry free of equipment, tested his trust in people, got him to follow her free in a walk and in a trot. On this Episode, she moved on to asking Larry how he feels about being a riding horse by getting on his back completely free.

I am so impressed by your techniques Mia! You read horses so well, and speak their language. To get on a horse for the first time with no tack is amazing. And then ride him with only a neck rope, trotting, really proves your techniques work!

Very Nice to watch the connection being built creating trust between horse and rider . I think a key with working with horses is to be patient and meet the horse where it’s at at that moment in time .

I wish you wouldn’t slap horses so hard. People argue that because they weigh so much, they aren’t bothered by it. It’s an old practice that keeps going forward, but no one bothers to really think about it. They are annoyed by a single fly landing on them. Don’t do it.

Really, now? I would ask you to judge by what you see, not by what you think...as a human. I don't want a fly on me, but I do love being patted on my shoulders, back, thighs, chest, buttocks.......it's all about measuring the hardness/softness. Horses, as I am sure you know, nibble at each other and bloody well bite pieces of skin and even flesh off.....so what are you trying to say? An untouched horse will spring away if you pat him...while a tame riding horse will not even flinch.....I prefer to rub, but I do pat....mine as well as the ones I tame for people.
