yep Hodge was tough. alotta these guys who are “Shooters” tho arent just tough.. but their style and ability. Oure TOUGHNESS is ppl like Brody. Guys that can simply take lots of abuse, and dish it out. Race, Rude, Ron Simmons, Haku, Orndorff, BJHaynes… just to name some. The List is long tho.. But Pro Wrestling has had, obviously, many tough guys over the years.

Adrian Street was legit too. You couldn’t get into the British pro ranks in the 50s-70s unless you had an amateur background and could look after yourself in the ring. Hence why Adrian kicked seven bells out Mr Savile at the Nottingham Ice Rink.

Karl Gotch and Billy Robinson also trained a lot of the Japanese early MMA fighters including Kazushi Sakuraba who beat many of the Gracies including Royce who won UFC1. Billy Robinson also trained recent MMA fighter Josh Barnett in catch wrestling. So the Wigan Snakepit had a huge influence on Pro Wrestling and MMA. Gotch was a Belgian but the German suplex is named after him when he played a German heel. Gotch most likely learned that suplex in Wigan, so it could just as easy be an English suplex. Kimura is just a double wrist lock taught to Kimura by Gotch and Robinson and is an old submission from Wigan.

Gotch would've learned that suplex and many more long before he went to Riley's gym in Wigan England He was a multi time Belgian champion in both Freestyle and Greco-Roman Roman wrestling and represented Belgium in both styles at the 1948 Olympics He began amateur wrestling as a boy in the mid 1930s He didn't travel to Wigan until 1950 on the advice of Billy Robinson's uncle Alf who had originally met him at the 1948 London Olympics

MANY of the New Japan wrestlers were trained by Karl Gotch. They were all legit technically sounds grapplers and submission wrestlers. Osamu Kido, who was a GOOD , but not necessarily great worker in the ring, unless on the mat, was reportedly one of the few who could breeze through the "Gotch Workout", with a full deck of cards. Boris Malenko , along with his sones Joe and Dean, received training from both their father and Gotch.

@shooter86-uw8ce Yes, and Fujiwara was a former Thai Boxer in Japan. I had read because of his background in Muay Thai and kickboxing, he had a legit "combat sports" mentality when going into his training, which is why he excelled in learning submissions. I have also seen a few interviews where U.S. talent that worked in Japan said "Inoki was a legit good shooter, but Fujiwara was the best."

I went to the Calgary matches for years. I saw Foley vs. Stu Hart with tag partners several times and Foley and Stu would always come heavy, stiff each other, and legitimately break each other's ribs, crack jaws, and my favorite was Stu giving Foley one of his patented lifters (uppercut) and Foley's dentures came tumbling out of his mouth in pieces. It was obvious they enjoyed shooting on each other. Foley stomped Stu for real wearing cowboy boots and broke Stu's ribs at like age 63 and Bret said Stu was on cloud nine after cuz he got to get back into ring action again. Foley and Dyno did great promos too when Dyno was fueding with Davey Boy.

According to Superstar Billy Graham, Billy Robinson had a reputation of shooting against opponents who were not skilled wrestlers as he resented them being in the business, so he would hurt them. Graham was booked to face Robinson and Graham said that before the match, he taped a razor blade to his finger, went over to Robinson, and told him if he felt even one overly firm grip on him, he'd cut Robinson up badly. Graham said Robinson didn't cross the line in that match.
@shooter86-uw8ce
@shooter86-uw8ce 4 ай бұрын
Billy Graham is repeating the same story numerous other wrestlers told about intimidating someone more skilled then them It's all bullshit Think about the mechanics of having a pro wrestling match while razor blades are taped to your fingers If you make a fist to throw a punch you'll cut your own palms How are you picking someone up for a body slam without risking slicing the other wrestler open? You think the other wrestler is letting you clothesline him near his neck area while having taped razor blades? Absolutely ridiculous
@michaelmarkowski204
@michaelmarkowski204 4 ай бұрын
@@shooter86-uw8ce Wrong. It was very common back in the day for wrestlers who were going to blade themselves / get color to firmly tape a corner of a blade to their finger with just the very tip of the point slightly exposed beyond the tape. The only way you could cut yourself was to intentionally jab your forehead with that tiny tip and create a very small cut into it, and the sweat combined with the blood pumping through your body could turn your whole face red. If their opponent also needed to get color, they almost always bladed themselves in the same manner (any sane wrestler would always want to do it themselves). Thus, Graham could easily control if and when he wanted to slice a cut through Robinson's skin, or not doi it if Robinson behaved himself.

Robinson didn't mention the incident in his book but talked about the Maivia fight in his book claiming he knocked him out while others have different versions, Jake Shannon claimed he knows witnesses who stated Robinson beat Maivia but didn't say who. Apparently all the Canadian wrestlers were happy that White did that to Robinson, White was indeed known for being a legitimate tough guy and a very shady character. Very similar to Billy Jack Haynes as was involved in all sorts such as enforcing, pimping, drug trafficking, bouncing etc I believe Sailor White was similar to guys like Harley Race and Blackjack Mulligan in a sense that they might not be "Shooters" But if you mess with them they will find a way to hurt you, very dangerous types of people.
