The best way to turn off Lars' snare drumming is mute or skip to the next track or change the disc out to an earlier Metallica CD when Metallica was truly Metallica.

19buseye71 You do realize that a band is always "truly" that band? Changing sound doesn't change that. Sure, most of Saint Anger was terrible, but at least they tried something different unlike most other big Metal bands.

Personally, I feel that Lars was accepting St. Anger's reception really well. Pre-release, the band was really psyched and Lars was always saying that it was very good and all that, yet, when it came out, reception was horrendous. This is suprising to me, as Lars has always been the hot-headed one, so seeing this does show the human side of Lars. Kudos to him.
@RejectedRecords1998
@RejectedRecords1998 Жыл бұрын
Reception to the record was largely positive among the actual Metallica fan base. That is undeniable. Poorly received records don’t sell 6,000,000 copies worldwide. The reputation St. Anger has came from a very loud but fairly small minority. There are always going to be contrarians whenever a band changes their sound but the people that didn’t like St. Anger absolutely despised it and made sure everyone knew their opinion of it. Meanwhile the average Metallica fan thought it was a good but not great record that sounded very unique.

has something to do with the fact that their producer at the time bob rock, said he'd made it that way because it "sounds like four dudes in a garage making rock" & regardless of what enters the mics @Hellwyck; better balance of OH, & Rooms, better EQ and compression profiling, along with resampling/layering, could have made this album sound great, whilst still having that ugly snare 'body'.

Lars is not just a legend, but an icon and a genre defining drummer. And one of the most creative of them all. And very unique. You instantly recognize it's him playing by his sound and signature patterns. Haters gonna bring up his tempo fails. Yes that's agreed. But that doesn't make him not one of the greatests.

the sad thing is that live, especially ont he last tour, the stuff from St. Anger sounded awesome. What I'd like to hear is a "do-over". Record the whole album again at a live concert. Throw on the usual overdubs, mixdown, and you've got a pretty decent record.
@12oclocklow16

It's funny because it doesn't sound half as bad as people make it out to be. We are generally very closed mined and it's difficult for anything new to be perceived well. It's quite refreshing to see musicians mix things up from time to time, even if it doesn't turn out quite like they wanted.

If you have nothing to say about an entire album, I don't think you know much about music. There's no such thing as a perfect album. I find it very funny that anyone can call "All Within My Hands" beautiful. "Hmm, I'm out of lyrics but there's still a few minutes left... should I make it shorter? Nah, it's not like I've cut any other overly long songs I've made. I better just add something cool... I know, how about I just shout kill for three minutes?! I better make sure not to give it any sort of melody either! I'm such a genius!"

Erik Wolfe You didn't say anything about it. All you said was that you think it's perfect. How do you know whether my taste is narrow or not? Again, if you think any album is "perfect" you're not the one to judge my taste, as that in itself is tasteless.
@DeviantMyphos
@DeviantMyphos 9 жыл бұрын
DarthUno Everyone has their own definition of Perfect, however expanding your music taste is apparently oh so frowned upon in the metal community. I like most things Metallica has produced, but St. Anger really doesn't need all the hate it does get for being a different album. Also at the time I was dealing with quite terrible depression and anger issues, and well it was an album that sort of fit my typical mood. If you don't like it, I honestly don't care, but you really can't define someone elses definition of "perfection".
@DenSvartaStjarnan
@DenSvartaStjarnan 9 жыл бұрын
Erik Wolfe I understand if you can relate to it, and I do agree that some things aren't as bad as people say. However, if you think St. Anger is perfect I must say you are very easily impressed. Nothing in real life is perfect, really.

For these songs, I like the snare with the ring in it. It sounds intrusive, not the usual, so that fits for the time and the stuff they were going through. Raw and discontented. Then their project in making it led to a tighter, more bonded group.

@takingdaggers

That's exactly my point. Kirk hasn't turned his wah pedal off since he got one. Metallica always made the claim that they didn't follow trends but doing an entire album with no guitar solos proves that they do.

One must keep in mind the producer of that album. Who also coincidentally was the bass player. They had a trendy producer the rest follows. In my opinion, S.A. was eons better than both load and reload. Which were both WAY more trendy sounding than S.A.

The Anarchist No, it's not elementary. At all. You should only add it if it fits the song, if it gives it a better feel. Not only does Metallica usually force one into every song, but they also make them painfully long and repetitive. They are what ruined their slower songs like One and Sanitarium. One should've ended at the same pace it started, shortly after the last lines are finished, and Sanitarium should've had a much shorter solo, or another chorus at the end. They would be so much more interesting with only one minute of solos or less. In the one-dimensional way that Metallica write them, solos are getting seriously old. The song just loses its entire focus. It loses my focus, at least. What purplexes me about St. Anger is that even without solos the songs were pretty much all too long. Endless waves of riffs and shit. Even Kill 'Em All, so praised, suffers greatly from all sounding the same thanks to their repetitive solo-writing. Dave Mustaine might know how to write good riffs and solos, but he, and everyone else involved in Metallica have no idea how a song's flow works. I guess the kind of Metalheads that Kill 'Em All attracted were too braindead from alchohol and drugs to even notice. But when people think the same nowadays, it just leads me to believe that people are one-dimensional. I guess I am too.

I always knew why the St anger snare drum sounded the way it did. I play drums myself, and the beads at the bottom of the snare is what gives it the snare drum sound, but if you remove the beads you get a St anger snare drum, Tool also uses the St anger snare drum in some of their songs.

I actually think its the exact opposite. I think the lyrics are too straight forward. It might have been what they needed, to sing about their issues and get it out in a straightforward manner, but they still didn't flow well and sounded almost amateurish compared to their previous material. the drums were definitely a major contributing factor though.

Good to see he's got a sense of humor about it. These guys continually amaze me with how un-metal they can be at times, and I don't see that as a bad thing. I see it as four guys leading four divergent lives, that come together for their love of heavy music. Sure you can argue that they're not that heavy, that's valid. They're a product of a different time. In that time, they were the trailblazers and the frontrunners. They not only pushed themselves to the point where they had to step back and take a different approach to their music, but they pushed the entire music industry, whether it liked it or not. They're the reason you can go to Walmart and find any kind of heavy music at all to begin with. They're the reason you have bands that push it harder and take metal even further. They take a lot of shit, some of it valid, some not, but what people forget is what they've done for us all. You're absolutely within your right to dislike their stuff. To each their own. Just understand the contributions they've made in the span of their career extend beyond just the music. Metallica is a lightning rod. They're not just a gateway, they're a well worn bridge that has allowed the frontlines of metal to expand exponentially further in the collective world consciousness. Back to the snare, plenty of people dislike it, and that's understandable. I for one actually kind of enjoy it. Lars doesn't just sit down behind his kit and think about it the same way everyone else does. The dude thinks deep. He paints. His drums and playing and expression are more than just the ridiculously thunderous assault that defies his age, or the backbone that holds the rhythmic chaos of Metallica together, it's his canvas. His hardware is his easel, his sticks are his paintbrushes. St. Anger wasn't meant to be just another Metallica album. Look at where the band was at the time and what they were going through. They almost fell apart. They've always been a very artistically honest band. They really and truly pour their hearts and souls into their art and their expression. They feel all of it. St. Anger was their diary of their climb back out of hell. It was their catharsis. They needed to write that album, and as much as we all like to pick at it, it was necessary for their survival as a band, and I'm glad they did it. I like the album, because it feels emotionally real and honest. Far more than a lot of music out there these days, metal or otherwise. I respect the album for what it is, rather than deride it for what it isn't. I can always go back and listen to Justice or Puppets and still be blown away by it. There's tons of other bands that push that direction still to this day, but none of them are as real and honest as Metallica. Those guys are poets. Knowing where they've been and what they've done, and seeing what they continue to do in spite of it all... that's amazing. It's also metal as fuck. They don't care what the world thinks Metallica should be. They ARE Metallica, and they're the ones writing their story. That's metal as fuck. No other band does that the way they do. I respect them for that. I also respect them for giving the world a different breed of metal that thrives to this day.

koettfaers imo it’s not just the snare sound st. Anger also just doesn’t sound like Metallica imo. Metallica ha always had their roots in a more fast paced thrash metal style. There songs always had good heavy riffs, great lyrics, great guitar solos, and drumming that serves the song. St anger falls short on a lot of this imo. Although death magnetic and hardwired are still pretty good.
