Las Hornillas Volcanic Activity Center - Miravalles Volcano - Costa Rica
Open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Cost: US $ 35 (volcano), $ 55 (volcano + waterfall) - Lunch included in the price.
Las Hornillas is located at the base of Volcan Miravalles. It is the only place in Costa Rica where it is possible to walk inside an active crater.
Along the way we can feel the natural force that emanates from this site. Fumaroles escape here and there.
Water and mud boil in several places and lime deposits color the ground dramatically.
We also coated our bodies with a thick layer of volcanic mud which we allowed to dry. Then we rinsed off in the shower.
It is truly amazing how our skin becomes so soft after this mud treatment!
There are several thermal water pools and we took the opportunity to take a break in one of them. There is also a sauna. Cabins and lockers are also at our disposal.
There is also a water slide, a restaurant and a campground on the site.
We would have liked to have had some extra time to hike the trail to the suspension bridges as well as the four waterfalls, but wanted to get back to the hotel before dark.
ADVICE
If you plan to go on excursions in Costa Rica, always plan to bring appropriate shoes and clothing for the outing you will be undertaking.
Find out before you go. There are several rainy areas in Costa Rica, especially in the mountains, and some areas are very windy.
Do not venture off the trails to avoid unexpected encounters: snake, spider, scorpion, etc.
Always have water on hand, even when traveling by car. If you get stuck in a traffic jam, even if you have air conditioning in the car, you are thirsty in broad daylight when the sun is beating directly down on the car.
