A common mistake I’ve seen tourists who visit Las Vegas during Halloween weekend is they don’t bother to pack a costume with their luggage before arriving to town. They think it’s easier to get a costume at one of the shops only to find out the costumes are overpriced, low stock and have to wait in long lines to pay. I use to work at a costume shop and can’t tell you how many tourists yell at me for the lines being too long or getting angry with me because the store is out of a certain size.

10 miles of walking is very common for me. 1 love walking; 2 it’s usually my only vacation exercise; 3 walking allows me to truly explore a city. *PRO TIP* - Before every other trip I buy Dr. Scholl’s foam inserts. Not the expensive gel. A few times I used some really cheap generic inserts. Worked fine but didn’t last as long. Anyway the tiny bit of extra cushion makes a world of difference.

The Bellagio has a 45 second delay on the fridge sensor ( in case you want to read a label) so I bought a can of coke from the shop and left it in my suitcase. I woke up a bit rough one morning and replaced a nice cold one for my warm one. When I checked out, no one said a word. Result 🕺

I always stay off the strip and Uber to where I want to go to on the strip and then I have my car for sightseeing. Parking at the hotels on the strip is more trouble than it is worth if you want to come and go a lot. Also don't be afraid of tourist things. Take the Big Bus tour. You will learn a great deal about Vegas and you can get on and off the bus at certain designated spots. Listen to Wolter he knows what he is talking about!

As someone who drives the billboard trucks on the strip for a living, I feel obligated to point out another "don't". And that is "DON'T wander in the middle of the street on the strip or cross when you're not supposed to". Not only is it dangerous for you but it can also be very disruptive for those of us that drive on there for hours and we have to slam on our brakes and potentially cause a bigger traffic jam because you couldn't wait for the next light.

I was going to mention not crossing the street when the light is red but you make a good point too. Las Vegas has the most pedestrian deaths of any city in America and for good reason. There are so many pedestrians near busy streets. This is not only true of crossing the street but also just walking on the sidewalk from casino to casino. Taxis and other vehicles use the driveways quite a bit to get into the casino and they travel over the sidewalk. I've seen so many people almost get clipped because the walk when the light says "Don't Walk".
@vercoda9997
@vercoda9997 2 жыл бұрын
I'm Irish - we tend to just look at the traffic, guesstimate our chances, and then bail across the road to the others side, leaving obedient tourists standing back waiting for the light to change, even if the road or street is empty. That's not to be confused with Dublin's many, many city centre junkies, who literally don't look or care about any traffic on any road, but just step out and walk (usually arguing loudly with their partner, two feet behind them, also casually walking out blindly into speeding traffic).
@Suisfonia
@Suisfonia 2 жыл бұрын
You'd think that was common sense, but sadly common sense isn't common. There's a reason, after all, why we have those large pedestrian bridges, but sadly people still seem inclined to take life into their own hands.

One mistake I made was underestimating the time it takes to walk places. Because everything is 10x bigger, it looks 10x closer! Do not be deceived! Also, for the hoover dam, i did a combo helicopter trip to the hoover dam and grand canyon. I felt that was worth it, and there was no waiting. Helicopter takes you to a cool lookout spot for lunch as well.

That's why my favorite way to get around the strip during the day is on the deuce bus. Save the walking for at night when the busses are crowded and traffic is bad. That can really save some miles from your feet

I personally enjoyed the bus tour! There are several different tours you can join, so research to see if it fits what you want. The bus tour I was on stopped by the dam museum and the driver gave amazing history and context to the dam that I would never have learned otherwise.

Went to Las Vegas in 2014 or 2015. We came by a tour bus (a package trip my parents signed up for) and it wasn't the most fun. I would for sure say come by car so you don't have to worry about limited freedom. Another thing is to spend more time in Vegas. We only have spent 2 days in Las Vegas before we had to leave, and it felt too short, so plan more time for your visit so you don't have to worry about rushing. Third, research what hotel and destinations beforehand. I was a little bit shocked after hearing the Riveria hotel has been demolished after we spent the night there. And lastly, sunscreen and water! Coming from Vancouver is a big change of weather, so be prepared for a change in climate

Also signing up for the loyalty cards is another bonus. The cards are being linked to your credit cards, with this maybe for every dollar that you spend on a normal day like for grocery then they might give you 4 reward points. Now this might not sound much but if you add this up over a three month total, then it might add up to a nice size discount for the room. Instead of paying let us say about $600 for the room over 4 days, you might only pay $250 for the room. Only sign up however if you feel like the hotel is a nice fit for your life and family.

As a local , I approve this message 😎 I would also add make sure to read the fine print for your room rate with resorts fees , parking fees , etc. Make sure to check the weather when visiting , today is supposed to be one of our hottest days on record. We hit 116 yesterday and flights were delayed and cancelled due to the extreme heat , supposed to be 116-118 today. Weather affects your trip dramatically. Same thing with winter , winter does get cold into the 30s at night and when the wind picks up its very chilly. For restaurants, stop by the Concierge desks or ask other locals for good recommendations. If you have kids, make sure to choose a hotel that's family friendly for your kids so they have something to do.

Winter gets cold LOL. I've lived here since the 70's. Yes when I was a kid, it did get cold (admittedly I was on a bicycle going to school instead of a warm car). Global warming issues mean our winters aren't nearly as cold as they used to be. It got down to 17F when I was a kid. Lately it almost never goes below freezing except the western edge of town. I never wear a jacket unless I'm going to be outside for more than a couple minutes. I still recommend bringing a jacket, and more if you are going into the mountains. Just keep in mind casinos are quite warm, your house is warm, your car is warm (after a couple minutes), and often you don't need a jacket here.

Additionally, most taxi drivers get commission/kickback by taking you some places (dispensaries or clubs). Take their advice with a grain of salt. A lot of the hotels are owned by the same corporation. If you sign up for loyalty program in one property, you’ll probably be able to use it in others. Also, it’s still illegal to smoke cannabis in public/hotel rooms.

as someone who lived in Vegas for years, I felt the need to point out a few things. 1. don't buy consumables on the strip at all, smokes/food/bottles of water, etc... they charge you way extra on the strip then going to a place off strip and buy it. that is not because they are trying to rip you off, it's because the rent for them being on the strip is so much higher. 2. the all loyalty program, do not sign up for any of those unless you want a ton of junk mail or junk calls/sms coming at you all the time, they do sell your info. 3. if you are using public transportation like the bus system, buying a ticket on the strip would cost you double or more. you can buy a 2 week pass off strip for the same amount that it would cost you like a 2 day pass or something like that, another thing you can do is just download the bus app and buy tickets on your phone, only thing to remember is you need to buy the ticket as residential and not was strip ticket, they are both the same thing other then the prices.

I have been to Las Vegas, but not to this really interesting looking place.

Up til The Great Plague (tm) happened, Lyft and Uber were the absolute best way to ride around town. NEVER take cabs. Especially from the airport, because they are going to try and "long haul" you and take the 215-15 instead of the surface streets unless you DEMAND that they don't. I'm a local and I never drive here when I want to go out and have fun. Lyft has been amazing until recently. The surge pricing is back in effect, unfortunately, and drivers are limited. Still better than cabs, though!

We took a cab from the airport to our hotel (NYNY) when we were there. It is set rates now depending on where you're going so the cabbies can't long haul you. It's set up by zones. Zone 1 (Mandalay Bay, Luxor) cost 19 bucks. We were in zone 2 and paid 23. A trip to the Strat runs 27.00 no matter the route.

"Resort fees" is an annoyance. You book and pay for your hotel. Turn up and they charge more. Include it in the price of the room so transparent.

Agreed. Its like buying a car but the doors are extra. That said: it is what it is. Whatever price they quote you just add a predetermined percentage in your head.

Those fees should not be a surprise to anyone at this point. They have been around for 10+ years and they are not going away anytime soon. If you don’t want to pay a resort fee you can always book a non-gaming property, there is a whole cluster of Mariotts southwest of the strip across I-15.
@danielwebb8402
@danielwebb8402 2 жыл бұрын
@@Lightningfootjones Yes. So on someone's first trip... they can often be a surprise. I'm not from the US, so I find it even strange the way you add sales tax after the advertised price. Here if you want $99 for something. The ticket price says 99. The website says 99 from the beginning. Because you want 99. Agree it all comes out in the wash eventually. It's just not transparent. Could argue deliberately underhand. "Should read all the terms and conditions". Sure. Like people do when downloading an update for their phone etc.

Great tips! I agree with everything as I'm a local here in Vegas. Folks, if you're coming to Vegas to drink, and you're planning on sitting at a bar for a couple hours, tip your bartender in advance if you want consistent, fast service. By tip, I don't mean $1 - $2. Sit down, be friendly, tip $5+ right off the bat. You'll notice how quickly you have refills. Make conversation with them, ask them where they like to hang out, eat, etc. You'll learn a lot and get to know them. Also, don't act like you're some top notch celeb or influencer who is going to ruin their life if they don't cater to you. I had a friend working at a cheap happy hour place who had someone yell out that he lost a $1 tip because he took so long to make 4 drinks. Vegas is still recovering from the pandemic and the service industry is still not back 100%. Be patient, be kind, and enjoy your trip! I am not in the service industry but a lot of my good friends are and they don't deserve the treatment they get from people visiting who think the're a big baller.

@lasthumankind I tip $2-$3 per drink, that's the standard, I was referring to if you plan on sitting there for a while and want faster service, tip ahead of time.

Only been to Vegas once, and I live four hours away. One mistake of Vegas is thinking you HAVE to gamble. There's so much to do there with so many shows, exhibits, and attractions. Vegas can be one of the most expensive trips you can ever take, but it can also be one of the cheapest.

I think the worst mistake of all is thinking you have to STAY on the Strip. Especially if you are renting a car, you can find several off-strip properties that are much cheaper, with tiny resort fees (compared to Strip hotels). Then you can visit the Strip, and park for free (Trop, Venetian, Treasure Island, Fashion Show Mall, etc) take in all the sights without the crazy costs and trappings of a strip hotel. Still, sign up for every Player's Club you come across and you just may get free rooms sent your way.

Sometimes they charge for the mini-bar when you don't take or move a thing. Evening 'opening' the fridge can make the items 'shake' just a bit and they charge you. Then you have to convince them you didn't do something. Completely rude. Check your bill. One big mistake you missed, Wolters, is running across the middle of the street on the strip instead of a cross-walk. If you don't get hit by a car or cab, you will literally be trapped. They have traffic spikes that you cannot climb over or get by. Wait for the cross-walk signal.

A few others: In regards to the Taxi's, some still do this but others do not. Some will often times take the *longest* route to your destination in order to get more money out of you (after all, you're a tourist, you don't know the roads) so instead of taking that short two or three mile, they'll extend it to five miles or even six miles and claim that it is due to traffic or some other nonsense. Another thing is to be careful what you record when you are here, yes you're here to fun and you want to record your adventure but keep in mind that there are things that Casino's don't really tolerate you recording. Slots they don't mind, for the most part; but the tables? Such as Craps, Blackjack, etc? That's another story. Of course it isn't *just* the tables. The Cashiers Cage is another area you shouldn't record, the Casino's are pretty protective of the Cashiers and they do not take to kindly to someone cording their actions or what they do behind those bars, so do not be surprised if someone on security walks up and tells you (not asks you, but tells you) to move along. Yes, I used to work in security before Covvy hit, and we've trespassed people for doing that. A panning recording of it is fine but actually walking *up* to the cage and actively recording people? Yea, that wasn't tolerated. One last little bit of information, DO NOT ask about October 1st *Please*. Employees are not allowed to talk about it.

The free drinks issue I had at slots was NO ONE came to do the free drinks. Is it something I'm doing wrong or is it just that particular casino floor wasn't staffed enough? Can't tip if no one comes even for the first time. :( At the time I was getting bored with gambling so the only reason to "keep going" was the idea of free drinks. Basically I got up and left; probably better financially lol.

This is an old comment but as a local... strip casinos typically have terrible drink service... The waitresses have too much floor to cover so it's not worth it. Circus circus and Paris are the two exceptions in my book.... Also the only two casinos on the strip that I'll gamble in.

Great video as always. To expand beyond the whole mini-fridge prices, I would say don't be fooled by the prices you see. The resorts will nickel and dime you for everything and you will pay a resort fee, you will pay an energy conservation fee, you will pay for internet, you will pay if you have to blow your nose (ok little exaggeration there). It is just like flying an Ultra Low-Cost Airline but it's reversed as the higher end the hotel is, the more gotcha fees they have.
