Narrative
On July 21, 2024, at approximately 14:10 hours, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department received a 911 call from an anonymous caller reporting a suspicious individual dressed as a clown and armed with a baseball bat at the Los Angeles Customs area. The caller indicated that the suspect was behaving erratically and posed a potential threat to public safety.
Deputies McKnight and Weston were dispatched to the scene and arrived at approximately 14:25 hours. Upon arrival, the deputies observed a male subject, later identified as Hunter McDonnell, fitting the description provided by the caller. McDonnell was dressed in a clown costume and was visibly holding a baseball bat.
Deputy McKnight and Deputy Weston approached McDonnell and issued verbal commands for him to drop the bat and surrender. McDonnell did not comply with the deputies' commands and instead became increasingly agitated, raising the bat in a threatening manner. Deputy McKnight attempted to de-escalate the situation by repeating the commands and warning McDonnell of the potential use of force if he did not comply.
Despite multiple warnings, McDonnell advanced toward the deputies, brandishing the bat in a menacing manner. Fearing for their safety and the safety of others in the vicinity, both Deputy McKnight and Deputy Weston discharged their service weapons, striking McDonnell in the torso. McDonnell immediately dropped the bat and fell to the ground.
Deputies McKnight and Weston secured the scene, called for medical assistance, and began rendering first aid to McDonnell. Paramedics arrived on the scene within minutes and transported McDonnell to Los Angeles County Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment for his injuries.
