Some guy near where I live actyally did this to a F-18 fighter jet of all things... Needless to say the pilot spotted him very quickly and the guy got arrested 15 minutes later.

In a major midwest US city, after air traffic control had received several complaints of someone shining a laser at air planes, the air traffic control put the police helicopter in the landing pattern. Now, this was at night, so the people on the ground just saw lights in the landing pattern. And the helicopter had to fly near its max speed to simulate the landing speed of a large passenger jet. But, when the people took the bait and shined the laser at the helicopter the flight observer on the helicopter put the spotlight on the people and guided officers on the ground right to them. Police arrested 4 or 5 college kids who did not realize the seriousness nor the consequences they will suffer for lasering a plane.

Hi. I just finished watching for the first time. I have a passion for astronomy. I own a green laser pointer. I use it when friends and I are out stargazing. It really makes talking about specific objects in the night sky a lot easier. Every one wants to play with the laser, but I WILL NOT let the laser out of my hand. I apologize and explain that, even just fooling around,. it only takes a second to cause damage. They all understand and it's cool. Secondly, I enjoyed listening about the three energy types and how it comes into play I had no idea! I subscribed because i want to learn more about aviation, and you explain it well Thank you

I had a discussion with a guide at Durham Cathedral once - they were using a basic red laser pointer to point out text on an above-ground tomb (of the Venerable Bede, for the Anglophiles out there). Unfortunately, the tomb was topped with polished stone, and the reflected laser dot was, unknown to the guide, pointed right in the face of an elderly visitor. Of course, in this case it was entirely accidental, and no permanent harm was done.

One thing I would really like to see from you is that you explain the rules of thumb a bit more in depth. I fly on the flight simulator when I have the time for all the preparation and I tried to use the rules but I haven't understood a few rules exactly like the 3 degree descent. I have trouble finding the correct vertical speed for a descent. I also get a lot of trouble on reading charts and finding out which star works perfectly fine with which approach. Keep up your great work! These Videos are very inspirational and helping! Greetings from a 17 year old Boy dreaming of what you became and are living!

I was flying as a passenger on an A320 not too long ago when I saw a laser being pointed at us out the window. Not sure if the pilots saw and/or reported it, or if anything happened to whoever did it. In retrospect, maybe I should have told the cabin crew, just in case.

As an amateur laserist (some who opperates professional lasers, be it a hobby or a job) I can completely agree with you! Not only will this as you said harm the pilot, bit with the increasing power of laser pointers it could do permanent damage! To give you an idea what I'm talking about, you can buy a 1mw laser on eBay for less than £10 that promises to light matches. However of course the planes are moving too fast for them to keep it that well targeted, however they could get around this by buying higher power ones. I myself have a 1000mw laser (its rgb and is a theatrical type laser, so don't worry, I'm not planning on taking it outside, let alone using it on a plane) which cost about £400, but you could by a 2000 watt one of these for £600, or get its pointer equivalent for about £200 on eBay. These types of laser are extremely dangerous! My stage one has to be used with a big red button to shut it down and there's a huge amount of safety procedures I have to go through before I can use it, but the worst part of all this is that I'm 16 years old. I haven't passed any tests, or even had to show I'd, I bought that laser from an online retailer using my debit card and nobody has tried to stop me. This is an issue as while I may not be doing anything bad with it, I cannot say the same for all people my age. :3
@hassanalihusseini17177 жыл бұрын
James Ray: You are talking really mature and full of reason for your age. If everyone was like you then there would not be any problems. I think fortunately there were not such lasers when I was 16. :-) Even I was no that bad, but may be just adventurous without any bad intention, but sometimes in this age you can get some crazy ideas to try.... :-)

I think that laws against carrying out laser attacks on planes are sufficient. And from what he said the punishments involved are severe enough to cause the proper deterrence. The problem is informing people about the illegality of carrying out attacks like these. A second note: If people were going through the trouble of buying and powering a strong laser to attack airplane pilots with you can be sure that even if no other charges are applied to the crime, that they would most likely get maximum penalties.
@sikkepossu7 жыл бұрын
UnbeltedSundew: Yes I agree. They are even severe enough that I do not have the courage to use the laserpointer to point stars as I don't want to point the laser even accidentally to any plane. I think the authorities wouldn't believe it was an accident. :(

Once when I was a child I pointed a laser at the sky and immediately my father-in-law slapped it out of my hand and he explained that I shouldn't do that because if a plane passed by I could blind a pilot. Of course it was very unlikely since I don't live anywhere close to an airport but I still never did it again because the idea stuck with me. So hearring about someone doing it in purpose just while a plane is landing and actually intentionally aiming it at an aircraft just gets my blood boiling.

@OlavSurlandHansen4 жыл бұрын
I am 62 and my only experience with this is watching a ton of pilot videos over the last year or so. Slowly, I am starting to pick up more of the radio talk taking place before, during and after a flight. The main reason why pilots can pick up what ATC tells, is that the dialogue is highly standardized, the same words are used in the same contexts all the time. So, the pilot is expecting what to hear at a certain stage - being cleared for takeoff, permitted to change heading, change altitude etc. Remember, the topic of these dialogues is limited to what is essential to proceed safely and using highly standardized phraseology.

As a teacher of physics, I cover aviation as an application as well as diffraction and how laser light is produced. I always point out how dangerous such an activity can be to the aircraft. However, in the back of my mind, I am always hoping that I have not GIVEN a student the idea. Doing an illegal activity, for some, is the thrill of risking it all in not getting caught. No warning on the device will deter such an individual. Doing such a thing for 'kicks' and the thrill of avoidance van be heady for some; especially the young. Interestingly at astronomical observatories that point lasers at the sky to produce an artifical star that allows them to obviate much of the atmospheric turbulence in their images, they have some one outside watching for aircraft which might cross the beam and if one is getting close, they turn off the laser until after the plane has passed.

I have had several laser attacks on approaches into Mexico, I don't even bother telling ATC anymore as they don't seem to care or have the capacity to do anything about it. My only recourse is to go dark, which seems to help - and then I only turn on the lights on short-final, not ideal by any means but it certainly beats getting blinded.

Thinking about how to solve the problem without ruining people's lives. The people who would shine with lasers at aircraft are most likely kids or teenagers, people who wouldn't think so far ahead. You can make the fine exorbitantly high, even put the death penalty on it, but if the person committing the crime isn't aware of it or the kind of danger they are putting people in, then it is kind of pointless. I think it might be more effective to include mandatory safety warnings on any laser sold. Something along the lines of "pointing lasers at aircraft can seriously jeopardize flight safety and constitutes a criminal offence punishable for up to n. years in prison". Some dumb kid probably doesn't realize the kind of harm they could cause, and I think such a warning is probably more effective as a deterrent.

Serious question: Which distance is still dangerous? I lived at a place where airplanes crossed but very high in the sky, above the clouds. At a night, I fixed a laser pen vertically as a beacon. I did not think about the airplanes. But after a few minutes, I noticed a moving light above me and turned it off of course. But was it really dangerous/illegal? It didn't move but just pointed right up to the sky. And once, I have seen a laser show at a distant concert under sky. Isn't that dangerous aswell?

I would add, there are plenty of legitimate reasons to shine a laser into the sky, for example laser star sight on a telescope (easier and better than a spotting scope). However the people that use such things will turn their lasers off the moment they see plane strobes. All I'm saying, is don't assume every laser is being aimed at planes, however if you see them directly pointing it towards a plane, then yeah call the police, lasers are not toys but very serious scientific instruments.

I had literally no control of the speed which increased from 130kt to 180kt in one second, altitude dropped, went around, struggling with the pitch to maintain the speed and so on and on until I got myself out finally... Second time I was slammed on the ground just after take-off because I ignored the "wind shear ahead" warning. Q: Is wind-shear THAT dangerous in real life? I had a doctor friend up today, but as he, and his family and I went out to lunch, I had forgotten to put this question to him: It is medically oriented. This would pertain more to GA rather than commercial aviation, such as small aircraft with single or dual engines, students who do their solos (or for that matter any pilot) What happens (especially at night training for IFR) if a pilot gets sick whilst flying and at cruise altitude, and suddenly unexpectedly get gI symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and worse diarrhoea? It is quite obvious that the latter would especially present a problem as the crampt space would only allow for diarrhoea accidents in one's clothing, and a rather embarrassing situation after managing to land and leave the aircraft on the tarmac for all to see. (I know from the front end many pilots purchase portable urnals for that situation). But I am addressing a diarrhoea issue whilst still airborne, the bad odour, the sticky mess, et all. has this ever happened to you, or anyone you know, How does one contend with this sort of embarrassment? (I am sort of speaking from personal experience, as I was in a C-172 on a flight session, and though I was not at that time flying solo, I did well… sort of had a small such accident. Having my instructor made it just the more embarrassing! Thank you………. BTW I agree totally that shining lasers onto aircraft is a very stupid and potentially dangerous act. I would even go so far as considering from a legal perspective as an act of malicious terrorism!
@hbarudi6 жыл бұрын
I agree about this situation, you can never know what happens to the beam of concentrated photons when it reaches you, especially an aircraft. Either it will flash the window and add a lot of light that will have a significant after effect in your eyes even after the light stopped being shined or the laser will get into the eye and permanently blind you. Especially with more powerful lasers becoming common, there are more safety concerns when it comes to lasers. What about when they say flash a mirror of reflected sunlight to notice someone stranded on an island, is that still being considered acceptable since it does have such impact on safety while the pilots will need to land the plane or helicopter to pick up the person stranded on a small island in the middle of the ocean. Yes, the weight of the aircraft is not the only reason why landing heavy aircraft is difficult, the potential and kinetic energy as well as your momentum, acceleration, and velocity vector quantities are also important.

Was a little surprised to hear that cadets can struggle with managing energy concepts. Not that I can fly a 737, but from the first days of flight simulators I recall phrases like "It's all about managing 'e'" and "Watch your 'e'". Is that perhaps more of a perspective taught in military scenarios?

@ethanpoole34437 жыл бұрын
Pyroslav x You are forgetting that lasers do not have the same divergence of normal light sources, while there is point spread at distance it is not an enormous amount. Further, many doing this are using green lasers which tend to both be more powerful (some used in such attacks are up to several watts -- not the 1-10mW modules in typical office laser pointers, but several Watts) and our eyes are also very acutely sensitive to this (green) frequency of light, so even less power is required to blind or dazzle the observer and at fairly significant ranges those higher powered lasers are still plenty powerful enough to cause permanent eye damage faster than the natural blink response can protect the eye if the beam is focused directly into they eye (more often it is diffused by the window or other surfaces and simply blinds or dazzles, but a direct hit on the eye can cause instant damage with the higher power modules). It is much harder to do damage with red lasers as our eyes are far less sensitive and the more common red laser modules tend towards being less powerful versus the green modules.

Would mirror-finish 'safety glasses' offer any protection against lasers? I know there are rules regarding whether pilots can wear sunglasses, and polarised lenses are bad because they affect the pilot's view of the LCD instrument screens, but would a mirror-finish be at all effective, or are the lasers too powerful nowadays?

How pilot comes to know if ATC is giving preferential treatment over the other aircrafts? In some cases single aircraft may be hovering around in the air for long time, doesn't get permission to ascend, descend, take off, land etc., Why I am asking this question because it has high impact fuel cost, which directly impact the cost per ticket to the passengers? How the passengers are ensured that they are always getting deal or paying the right amount all time in terms of fuel costs?
@danhammond90666 жыл бұрын
ATC always handles aircraft in a first come first served basis. If an airport gets backed up and your plane is the tenth one to arrive it will hold in a holding pattern until the 9 before you have landed then it is your turn to land. And yes they do have protocol to handle emergencies such as running out of fuel. Buy know that every flight by law is required to carry enough fuel to make its destination and then divert to an alternate airport of its own choice plus another 30 minutes beyond that. So holding for say even 20 airplanes to land ahead of you should be no fuel related problem.

so how do you figure your weight for landing? it would make sense that you just take your weight at take off an subtract the weight of the fuel burned since that would be the only thing to change, i know baggage is weighed but have never seen a scale at an airport. since most people tend to be a bit modest with how much they weigh, you cant take that as a hard number to use and with 200 number of people saying 10 off what they weigh that would be 2000 lbs. so is there a system that gives a gross air craft weight or is it more a calculated thing? as for the laser pointing theres only one thing that fixes stupid and that is a bigger stick

We calculate the weight during takeoff accurately, then we subtract the fuel used and we can also accurately predict the fuel we will use during descend and approach. That way we can accursately predict the landing weight.

On the subject of pointing lasers at aircraft, if some sad person decided to do it during daylight hours, does it still effect the pilots?

Yep.

Is there technology to coat the windows to filter out laser without adverse impact on other visual data? FedEx requests ability to burn out the heads of incoming? Is that an option an airline can get for those operating laser devices? Can drones be programmed to intercept birds to eliminate bird strikes? Or can ground-based lasers do the job?

Can a laser penetrate clouds? In other words if it is cloudy and there is no visible or audible indication of an aircraft could it still be dangerous or illegal to shine a laser pen into the sky and inadvertantly cause a problem ? Thanks.

Since airplanes work on prevention principle, (even some things that are 1 in 100,000+ have avoidance technology or redundancy) Can pilots add cheap laser protection glasses to their checklist? :) thanks.

Thanks for this video, everyone needs to know that laser attacks are not just a simple prank. They are a major threat to the flight and the pilot's vision and career. There has been a recent increase in laser attacks here in Canada as well. The most recent one in my city involved a medical evacuation helicopter doing a search and rescue mission. The pilot had to turn back due to temporary blindness. A life was put in danger or possibly lost. Also these lasers are not your simple laser pointer. Very powerful green lasers are readily available online. Governments need to restrict access to these green lasers online. They should not get anywhere near the hands of minors or pranksters.

30 year prison sentence for anyone convicted of shooting a laser at an aircraft.

Not for a first offense. For such it should be a misdemeanor charge with at least a $ 1000 fine and/ 6 months in jail and confiscation of your laser equipment unless it results in a plane crash. Then it should be a felony with more serious charges. Second offense more serious charges again. Or better still, don't allow laser equipment or pointers through airport security in the first place.

But the dangerous idiots who point lasers at airplanes are not in the airport, let alone flyers who have passed through security. They're well away from the airports- lasers are so powerful and the beams so direct that they don't need to be close to their target, from what I've read.
Belgrade airpot Nikola Tesla, approach to the runway 12 goes quite low over the heavily populated area. A few years ago, some 1diots decided it is a good idea to do this stuff. Them doing it only once or twice every night wasn't enough to not get caught. They were apprehended and it did not happen again after that.

I can't figure how a little laser can be disabling at such a long distance unless it's more than a small laser and how can be aimed because the front plane's windows tend to be Higher and small. ?

How long until "put on laser glasses" becomes part of the landing checklist :( Can they not coat the cockpit windows with the same stuff that those glasses use, or would that result in other visibility problems?
@UnbeltedSundew7 жыл бұрын
From what I understand the glasses block the spectrum of light that the laser is operating on, so glasses for green lasers would block all green light etc.

How do you deal with advice about aircraft that has been adviced to you that there is no responce to and about said air craft from air trafic control calling, while they are in your near air space as adviced by air trafic control to you, them makeing this aircraft to be unkown {not an ET event} maybe radio of Unkown Air Craft is in operative. down or up or turn downward to rear and under said UAC ofcource after you had advice air trafic control of what your are going to do? sorry long sentence RAS

I wonder if they could install mirrored glass on the cockpit windows. Or would that reduce visibility or make it difficult to see out at night? Or maybe have electrically dimmable windows (like the A380 has) and a laser sensor that darkens the windows when laser light is detected. I guess that means you'd have to declare a missed approach if you can't see out the windows. Hopefully, the cops will have caught the scumbag by the time you line up again...

Arm the plane with countermeasure, beaming more powerful laser back to the source. lol
@patrickdaxboeck40565 жыл бұрын
Honestly. A normal Laserpointer could never ever do any damage, if it is handheld. Hands just shake too much. I made various calculations with friends. A close friend had a very powerful laser from a tunnel construction and we used that laser to flash across the lake of Constanz decades ago. Then he made a mirror system with two loudspeakers and we used it to project patterns on a wall at our private parties. We did it in ways totally illegal nowadays. But actually I know how dangerous or not dangerous these lasers are. It is my opinion that without a very accurate tracking system, it is impossible to blind any pilot as soon as the distance to the plane is more than 100m and the plane with a speed of more than 100km/h. So this is just plain media panic.
