The fact that the real cats weren’t in so many shots kinda suggests they weren’t trained but that could’ve just been intentional comedic choice plus 90% of the shots were obviously too rough to even use real versions. It's similar in style to Dan Harmon's "Computerman" and "Laser Fart" series of shorts from his Channel 101 days. Chris Tallman's "Time Belt" series is also a worthy forerunner.
