Your doctor has recommended that you undergo Photorefractive Keratectomy - or PRK Laser surgery - to correct a vision problem. But what does that actually mean?
The human eye is constructed like a camera ... with a clear lens in the front and light-sensitive tissue at the rear. This tissue makes up the retina which acts like photographic film.
In an eye that has perfect vision, light rays passing through the pupil are focused by the lens to fall precisely at the center of the retina. There are many common problems that can affect the eye and prevent light rays from focusing properly on the retina.
Three of these problems, myopia - or nearsightedness; hyperopia - or farsightedness; and astigmatism can often be corrected or reduced with the use of PRK laser surgery.
Myopia, or nearsightedness, occurs when the shape of the eye is too long or the curve of the cornea is too extreme. In this case, light rays are focused on a point in front of the retina - instead of on the retina itself.
Hyperopia, or farsightedness, occurs when the shape of the eye is too short. In this case, light rays are focused on a point behind the retina.
Astigmatism occurs when the cornea is unevenly curved,
causing light rays to fall off center or not to focus properly at all.
In either case, PRK laser surgery can be used to flatten all or part of the cornea ... allowing your doctor to cause the focal point of light entering the eye to fall more closely to the center of the surface of the retina.
PRK is a simple and nonintrusive procedure that is designed to reduce or eliminate the need for glasses or contact lenses. PRK laser surgery generally does not have any effect on a patient's overall health and there are no risks in choosing not to have the surgery.
Your Procedure:
On the day of your operation, you will be asked to put on a surgical gown.
You may receive a sedative by mouth and an intravenous line may be put in.
You will then be transferred to the operating table.
and you'll be given an anesthetic in the form of eye drops and an eyelid holder will be placed around the eye to prevent blinking.
When the operative field is numb, the doctor will carefully remove the epithelium, or top layer of cells, exposing the stroma - the non-cellular portion of the cornea.
Next, your doctor will use a computer to control pulses of cool laser light.
These pulses will delicately remove microscopically thin layers of cells from the stroma. By removing tissue in this manner, your doctor will tailor the new shape of your cornea according to the exact nature of your vision problem.
The entire procedure usually takes about 5 minutes and is painless.
Following surgery, you'll be given protective contact lenses to wear for a few days while the outer layer of cells grows back.

Had Prk done a week ago and i can already tell this was the best choice I have made. I was extremely nervous for months to get this but I had to get this to forward with my career. This video is exactly what I experienced and glad I watched it AFTER the procedure. 0 pain and was really fast, however the only annoying thing was that after the surgery i could feel the contact lenses when i blinked but it was only in there for 4 days. I strongly recommend getting this done, waking up not having glasses is amazing. No more cleaning smudged glasses, no more finding the right spot to lay your head so not to bend glasses, no more little specks all over the glasses when in the rain. Fight your fear and do it! Your will be proud of yourself!

I had PRK done on both eyes in 1996, and had 20/20 vision for well over 25 years. The video seems to be exactly accurate about the procedure. Some advice: don't panic after the procedure because your vision in the surgical eye will be blurry from Friday until Monday afternoon, and then all of the sudden...your vision will be the best it has ever been in your life on Monday. There is some postop pain associated with PRK...don't panic, this is normal. Take your pain meds as prescribed and you should be fine. Also, just take it easy for a couple days following the procedure. Lastly, just remember to give it a few days following the procedure. It will all be okay and you will have great vision for many years to come!

I had prk 3 weeks ago. My advice to anyone, is don't watch this video till after the surgery. Just remember they are operating on your eye, so you will not know any of this is going on as you are watching in the 3rd person. All you will see at the time is your vision being blacked out as the different tools cover your eye, you wont feel a thing. Best thing you will ever do.

Did this surgery exactly a week ago. Today they removed the protective lenses, and my vision is extremely blurry now. It's very frustrating since I could see way sharper than this a day before, with lenses. I'm quite aware that I'm an extreme case with -10 right eye, -8 left, and it will take longer for me to see sharp, but to see extremely blurry 1 week after the surgery, well I wasn't prepared for that, I'm getting highly impatient sadly. :/

I was told when I was younger that I had to be atleast 21. I think Lasikplus does it as young as 18 though. I had Lasik in my right eye and PRK in my left eye when I was 22. Lasik was so nice, it only hurt for a few hours one the way home and they give you numbing drops. After that lasik was no longer a problem. The PRK is what HURT. It took almost a week for the pain to go away but was well worth it. The surgery can be kinda expensive. Mine was about $4000. Before I had my surgery I could only see color and movement everything was blurry unless it was about 2-3 inches from my eyes. I also had astigmatism in both eyes.

Angela Zhang I had mine done at Lasik Plus in Atlanta, Ga and Dr. Eugene Smith did mine. I highly recommend that office they take really good care of you and have a great staff with good attitudes. After my operation my Lasik eye was good and heeled up within the next few days, no more pain after the first few hours after surgery so it was great. I had to have PRK in my left eye because of the degree of astigmatism that I had. PRK was a longer heeling process, lots of pain but well worth it. I have better vision in my PRK eye and can see at better ranges now then I can my right eye that had Lasik. My vision was 20/15 I believe when I went for my last checkup. The whole thing is well worth it though. After a week or so my eyes were pretty good and heeled but I was careful with how I rubbed them and treated them for months up to a year after my surgery just to make sure everything heeled perfectly. They were dry for almost a year but they tell you which drops to buy you are supposed to use a preservative free eye drop and it was like $10 at the store for like a 36 pack so it was not that bad buying them. I had a lot of nerves going into my surgery I was worried about the pain, surgery and risk but it is not as bad as you thank. My problem was I kept watching videos and reading about it and freaked myself out but its really not that bad. If you want to have the operation just make an appointment and go talk with them. They will explain everything to you, your aftercare and all the risk. The day of my surgery I was terrified almost to the point of backing out but once I was on the table and it all started I settled down a little bit. It is well worth it after the operation. The results are amazing. Before this surgery I could not even walk around the house without glasses or contacts because I could only see colors and blurs. I could see that someone or something was there only if it moved or made a noise so for me the benefits were great.

the actual time you need to remain still is exactly 10 seconds per eye. Even if you move there is no problem.Relax

For PRK it's around 10 seconds per eye (laser beam time) all the rest is preparation-eye drops. At least that was for me

Even if you want to blink you can't. They put tape around your eye and another thing that prevents you from blinking. All prep might be around 10 minutes but in my case they did not scrape anything. Note that I'm talking about the PRK method, not LASIK

***** Good luck! But I think this is NOT smart. .better get over with it once than go though this twice. Becides, they won't operate both eyes at the same time and you can see during the whole process. So if something goes wrong at the first eye you'll know. However the most important thing and most risky is post - operation care
@aggelosn.6846
@aggelosn.6846 8 жыл бұрын
***** I don't want to make you feel embarrassed but it is not smart for many of the reasons you mentioned. 1. Safety: Your eyes won't be operated at the same time 2. If something goes wrong it is how you treat the eyes after yhe the operation. It's more safe to do the process once and carefully than twice. Why become a hermit twice and undergo the risk twice? 3. If you're careless and injure your eyes won't make a difference if you have 2 eyes operated in a short period or 1+1 eye in a longer period. The risk is the same. Actually you'll have to be careful for 2 times longer period (even if it is for 1 eye). Anyway mate its your life I'm just saying for me I would not waste another 3-4 months to go over this again. Such a waste of time, psychology, etc and no actual avoidance of risk

I just got this done today... omfg it hurt so horribly!! Lol it felt like clockwork orange status! And then knives stabbing your eyes, then tweezers stabbing and pinching and ripping out pieces of ur eyes!!! So fucking painful. If hell exists...it would be the operation. It felt like an eternity. . Holy hell
