yes, LEDs are similar to solar panels in that the LEDs also create a current when shined on by light. Same for other diodes and transistors. However these nowadays generally have dark packages which make this nearly impossible. BTW this effect has been demonstrated previously and is (was?) actually in use in some commercial products. The application here is that it is used to transfer information or commands into a computer device.
