Isn't that mainsheet pump illegal? I've seen a lot of sailors doing that, but the 42.3(c) is supposed to prohibit any action that causes the leech to flick.

This link is particularly useful when it comes to Rule 42 for the Laser www.sailing.org/tools/documents/Rule42Laser201320032014-[16804].pdf Flicking of the leech is allowed as long as it is related to steering, trying to initiate surfing (once per wave), or connected to the wind/wave conditions. The 'drop pump' will usually be used after bearing away to a by-the-lee angle, so is technically connected to steering of the boat
