Albert Einstein won the Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on the photoelectric effect, not relativity. Not only that, but his paper on relativity was rejected for his doctoral thesis (it was considered to be "a little uncanny") and he didn't get his doctorate until he wrote his paper on the photoelectric effect.

Small correction, the gain medium does not have to be pumped by light. For instance in gas lasers you pass a current through the gas and in diode lasers (the most common type of laser) you pump electrons into the i region of a p-i-n diode. Also when light is used for pumping it does not have to be flashed and it can't be if you want a continuous wave rather than pulsed laser.

Most lasers nowadays are semiconductor lasers, using p-type and n-type to drop the energy level of an electron to emit a photon. And pulse lasers go up to a petawatt but pulse so fast they just vaporize the first layer of the target, rather than penetrating it.

Most comercial lasers today are laser diodes. They use a special form of LED that emmits light at specific angles which are then made paralel (collimated) using a lens. They are cheaper, more compact than traditional lasers but are no were near as powerfull as traditional lasers.
@kg4boj
@kg4boj 8 жыл бұрын
+ronettreker Define a "traditional laser" for us would you? I happen to have a fiber coupled 50W IR laser diode right here on my desk, runs fine off a couple D cell batteries, I also have a slightly larger 150W laser diode (it can cut metal) would you consider a 150W laser "not powerful" ,not I. BTW a laser diode is NOT a "special form of led" Their construction is very much different.
@ronettreker
@ronettreker 8 жыл бұрын
+Peter Crackpot Pete Carlson By traditional lasers I mean gas lasers which are pumped using gas discharge, dye lasers and solid state lasers like the ruby one shown by Linus which are pumped optically. A laser diode is basically an LED whith and intrinsic gain medium between the positive and negative semiconductors. It's not identical to a normal LED, that's why I called it "a special form of LED". Because of their design laser diodes produce divergent light so they need a collimating lens. Also, because it's a LIGHT EMITING DIODE (Semiconductor device that emits light using a P-N junction) it can fail more easily due to overheating and overpowering. Gas and solid state lasers can be more powerfull as they can be more easily cooled. Also some traditional lasers can be pulsed at high power, something that you can't do with laser diodes as they would fail due to over-voltage. No, 150W is not that powerfull since gas lasers and optically pumped lasers can go beyond 1KW. Laser diodes are more efficient that traditional ones though, that's why you can run them using a few D cells.

You messed up one of the major components of how a laser works. It's not excited by a short flash of a lamp (any more). The optical laser you described is pumped with another laser at a different wavelength. Semiconductor lasers, like in laser pointers and regular consumer devices, are excited with a very high voltage which causes some electrons to jump up to higher energy levels. I believe the lamp mentioned is correct in the sense that it was used to pump the first laser, the ruby laser.
