I also get the second derivative wrt z in the 3rd equation(equation for psi). Could anyone explain how the second derivative wrt z was cancelled from equations 2 to 3?

Is there a 2nd class of this subject? I still didn't get how to sort out the distance from the tip of the light source to the beam waist i.e. where the beam waist (z=0) located in space. Can anybody help me?

The q(z) helps u to locate where ur beam waist would be. Essentially the beam waist is the beam radius at z=0.
