81. I think we can all make a strong case for Viren being the greatest Olympic runner in history. Though you may mention Nurmi, let us not forget that five of his nine gold medals were won in events that are now defunct; as for Emil Zapotek... well, first of all you have to qualify for the Olympic Marathon, so your first Marathon can't come in the Olympic games, and second his winning time was 10 minutes slower than Viren's fifth place finish. Viren and his double double: unparalleled.
@YiftertheShifter114 жыл бұрын
I usually judge that on three criterion: best performances (personal bests), consistency, and titles, with other categories like longevity, win streaks, head to heads, etc... factoring in. Viren may not have been the most consistent runner, but his personal bests were world records when set, and his Olympic triumphs are unprecedented. Yes: based on my criterion, Viren is one of the best.

@YiftertheShifter113 жыл бұрын
@mahtivaari72 Prefontaine actually did place second in some European races (including one around the time of this race), and even won a race in Oslo. The LA times mile has international competitors, so maybe we can notch that up too. Other than that, Pre's chances of winning in Montreal are very much exaggerated.
@mahtivaari7213 жыл бұрын
This was Prefontaine's best international performance. His ghost did not win in Montreal 4 years later even though Americans seem to think so.

@YiftertheShifter114 жыл бұрын
Pre lost to Viren. Pre won zero medals. Pre set zero world records. Pre won zero international races. Viren won four Olympic golds, set three world records (5000m, 10000m, 2 miles), two Olympic records, and ran more meters in one Olympiad (1976) than any other runner in history. Viren was the best. Pre settles for fourth, or more properly (and a great foreshadowing in these words) "DIES in the final strides."

Viren ran the perfect race-much is made about Pre-ultimately he made a gutsy move and it cost him a medal-in reality he wasn't the best runner there- Gamouddi already had 2 Olympic medals to his credit and Pre would have had 3rd if he didn't move at 200m to go, but he wouldn't have won that race regardless of how he ran it-in fairness, he was only 21, and his real shot at gold was Montreal but the rest is history as they say...

Uh... yeah, can you think of anybody who has run an Olympic final (AND WON IT :))) less than 24 hours before running 26.2 miles? Scratch that, make it TWO FINALS, 10000m HEATS AND FINALS, 30000m TOTAL, as opposed to Shorter who, like all the other marathon runners, had experience at the distance and were well rested prior. It's a tremendous accomplishment for someone in those circumstances to even finish the marathon, let alone in the top 10, or even 5!

@toby099 But Prefontaine and the others came to win, not to show that they have "courage and balls." There can be one Olympic champion in the event, and that goes to the winner. The winner, whichever way he/she wins (provided it's legal) gets the gold medal; if he shows courage and guts, great, that accentuates the prize. But showing "courage and balls," then fading to 4th is not a replacement for winning.

Yes, it was legal, but a lot of the criticism of today gears around the ethics of using a performance-enhancing technique (regardless of whether it was legal at the time or not) to win a race. Because it was legal at the time and because Viren kept denying having boosted and losing some easy money makes me conclude he never blood-doped.

Veremos...

You don't need balls and courage to win the 5000 gold medal in the olimpic. You need to run with the leaders and have a devastating kick in the last 300 m. 38.5 would make you a champ.

@MrJuha82 You misunderstood me. Stewart won the bronze quite fairly. My comment was meant as irony against those silly American Pre-fans who think that beating their hero was a crime in itself. Ymmärsit väärin. Stewart voitti pronssin täysin reilusti. Kommenttini oli tarkoitettu ironiaksi niitä hassuja amerikkalaisia faneja kohtaan, joiden mielestä Prefontainen voittaminen oli itsessään rikos.

Compare that to the medal count of the Finns, which is of of course ... zero ... if you don't count Karrlo Maaninka,and I dont, as he later admitted to doping - something Viren never had the guts to do ... people are always looking for an excuse instead of just getting the job done....this idea of blood doping by viren is about as inane as it gets...viren won by shear talent and the ability to use tactics to his advantage and that includes always knowing how to position himself...of course he could have eliminated tactics by pulling a herb Elliot and just racing away from the competition...viren and Clarke could have teamed up together for an assault on both 13:00 and 27:00 barriers....clarke was ahead of his time pace wise and better than viren pace wise but lacked virens finishing drives...
