I agree, but it seems like Boeing is phasing the 747's out in general. I was an FO on our 747-200 (Lufthansa had several) and to me they represent not only a great era but my youth:-))

The Boeing 747-200 of Kalitta (N793CK) has a new job :) The Cargo Company (TZS) from Georgia bought the B747 and is currently preparing the old lady for its new life. Great news in my opinion !!

The last time I went to Paris it was on TWA flight 800 from JFK. A couple days after the same flight exploded over the ocean. My wife was worried we were flying the same exact flight. I reassured her that the odds that the same exact flight would meet the same fate was astronomical. "I'm glad it's the same flight number" I said. Just before boarding, they changed the flight number! Noooo! LOL. The replacement plane was chartered from Air France and was a plain white 747-200. I miss jet engines sounding like that. Great video.

I'm just a girl who LOVES planes, trains and automobiles, but I was awestruck at the sharp angle of ascent in that first take-off on a relatively short length of runway! wowsah . . . I used to lay on my back at YVR and watch the Jumbos come in right after the other, and was still amazed at how close they felt to me on the ground ~ all that immense weight seemingly hanging in space right over me before touching down! I realize I was not monitoring cargo aircraft with their immense payload.

My uncle, used to work as A&P mechanic for Connie "The Bounty Hunter" Kalitta at Willow Run Airport in Ypsilanti, MI years ago. Back before they moved most of the maintenance operations to the closed down Wurtsmith AFB in Oscoda, MI. Many times...I got to explore the 747's, DC-8's and DC-9's they maintained. It was also fun....getting VIP treatment at NHRA Drag Races with Team Kalitta years ago too.....

While it is sad to see the old birds grounded, they are giving way to cleaner, greener, quieter and an all round better generation of aircraft. We simply can't afford to keep polluting the planet like we have been. ✌

Awesome! It's kind of hard to forget the first time we see an airplane like the 747. The first time I saw one was in 1974, in the transit lounge waiting for another flight. This was a ground level room with a large glass wall and when I looked at it's direction, all I could initially see was the underside of the huge 747. My first impression was that its proportions were more like a ship's than an airplane's. I had to come really close to the large glass pane to see the entire 747. What a monster! More than 40 years later, the type still impresses me whenever I see it.

Well.. Korean Air is not operating 747 classics now, but they are still storing 747-200 now in Jungseok Airport which is located in Jeju island, Korea. Its tail number is HL7463(Originally It was HL7410, but it was changed to HL7463 in 1981), and it was the first 747 in Korean Air. Its first flight was in 1973, so it is about 45 years old now. That 747 is not in service now, but I heard that the aircraft (including all four engines) are still able to use. Also cabin and cockpit is well preserved. I hope this will be a useful information for you :)

Back in May 1975 when I was a 21 year old, I flew to England in a 747-200. I bugged the flight attendant (called a stewardess back then) to ask the captain for permission to see the flight deck (called a cockpit back then). She finally asked the captain and he said YES! He got out of his seat, and said "Don't touch anything - have a seat". I sat in the pilot's seat of a fully loaded 747-200 while it was in flight at cruise speed (900km/hour) above the Atlantic Ocean. There was a whole panorama of buttons and switches and meters and knobs and lights at desk level and all above the windshield. I touched nothing. I will be eternally grateful to that pilot for trusting me and letting me have that experience. That fond memory is a constant reminder to me that we now live in a totally different age. One would now be removed or arrested just for making the request, and understandably so, tragically. By the way, the view was AMAZING. We glided above the clouds and I had a 190 degree view.

No. They are highly modified 747-200B airplanes. The 400 has winglets, and neither one of the Air Force Ones have winglets. They went into service a year after the 400 went into service, but it takes years to get an Air Force One ready, and there wouldn't have been time between the 400's first flight and the introduction of the two current Air Force Ones.

Donkey B Well, the 400's & -8's wouldn't exist if the 100's & 200's hadn't come first. They literally changed the world! And those P&W JT-9D engines were the first commercially successful high-bypass turbofan engines... now they all are high-bypass. I love the newer ones too... but I'd this is where they came from...

Randy She Who knows it may happen. If only the 747-8 had Carbon Fibre composite wings instead of the Advanced Aluminum Alloy wings, composite tail and some other tweaks we may have seen more improvements by at least 6%. But oh well I believe it just can't be economical enough
@donkeyb2961
@donkeyb2961 7 жыл бұрын
Dana Danarosana Very true. I've never been in a 747-100 but have been on a 747-200 retired Air France cockpit. Old analogue steam cockpit pilots would say but I learned how the original jumbo jet was created and how that lead to the 747 - 400 and 747-8, s huge step up from an old model to the new more modern one. I say I only bother with the 747-8 and 747-400 because there the only models I see often and having to chase for a classic doesn't make much sense for me. The 747 models look identical but just longer hump and new wings and engines but the fuselage scheme remains identical.
