Hi! For the American school system, kids typically go to school from September through June! In the southern states like Florida where they live, kids will go to school from August through May so it isn’t too hot in the schools. They get about 12 weeks off for the summer :)

Fellow South African here - If you Google American School year - The school year actually dates back to when the farming schedule took precedence over everything else. Farming can only be done in the spring, summer, and fall. Agriculture is he reason for summer breaks, which supposedly allowed for young people to assist with responsibilities on family farms. There is also Climate Considerations: In regions with particularly harsh winters, starting school earlier in August allows for more flexibility to schedule breaks and make up for snow days or other weather-related disruptions. Summer is also still a popular time for family vacations, and most have a two or three-month summer vacation. The academic year typically runs from August or early September until the end of May or early June. Starting in August often allows schools to end the first semester before the winter holidays around Christmas.
