It all ends up on the shores of Lake Ontario So summer Time Lake Ontario is about 62° after a big storm out there sometimes In a heat wave it can be 72° And this is about 35 40 miles from the Niagara River East also when a storm comes across from Canada we know we’re going to get a lot of snow But I still love Lake Ontario northern lights it might be 50 miles across But on a hot summer day the lake is like glass is something to see it looks like the city of Trono is sitting out on the middle of Lake Ontario it’s a reflection And then Northern lights You can actually see mountains in the sky reflection from the North Pole

One thing I wonder though is what the little "drain hole" is on the other side. Moving water very rarely freezes unless it is very very cold, so did the giant wall of ice in the passage form from the spray of the falls blowing and piling up as ice? That amount of ice is massively impressive. Just gives one a feeling for how powerful and beautiful the forces of nature can be. Our efforts look pretty puny in comparison.

I assume you're referring to the tunnel seen at about 02:31. That is the exit of the old tailrace tunnel which ran from the now-demolished Edward Dean Adams electrical generating station, which was located on the U.S. side of the river, just above Niagara Falls. This power station, utilizing the Westinghouse / Nikola Tesla AC method, took in river water from above the falls, which was dropped into deep turbine shaft pits, and which then flowed into the discharge tunnel. This brick lined tunnel basically was dug into the rock under the City of Niagara Falls, N.Y. during 1892-94 and is some 6,700 feet long, The Adams power station was decommissioned, and was, unfortunately, demolished, but the tunnel remained. A sewage treatment plant was later built on the former power station site, and now they still use the same Adams tunnel to release the treated grey water. The water runs pretty much 24/7, and in the winter (if an ice bridge is in existence) there is almost always a pocket of open water in front of it, where the warmer water flows into the river - although there have been times during real cold snaps when I've seen that pocket frozen over as well. Also, an interesting characteristic of the Adam tunnel outfall is that most of the time, the water from the tunnel (due to the reverse-flowing eddys which run along the river banks) is pulled UPstream (towards the Maid passenger dock) and then pushed downstream. This trait is usually seen on certain days, when the Niagara River has its trademark turquoise colour, and this contrasts to the outfall water, which is a darker, brackish-blue-grey in colour, and this colour contrast can be clearly seen stretching upstream first. This trait can also be seen at certain points in the winter, when there is no actual ice bridge, but there IS ice flow on the surface of the river; during a situation like that, little chunks of ice that happen to flow by the Adams tunnel mouth can be seen flowing upstream nearer the river bank, while at the same time, ice in the middle of the river is flowing downstream.

That's just what they do! The seagulls can get quite annoying! They nest down in the gorge by the thousands.

I watched your earlier video, day 5 or 6 I think, and it is hard to believe that this much remains 70+ days later. How thick was the ice at it's maximum? Once again, thanks for the footage, it is awesome.

The ice was at least 20+ ft above the water line at times, I'm sure; and of course, there's more ice underneath as well. And also, the river still flows underneath the whole thing!

At 2:48 - is that a small part of a bridge that was being built and was never finished? Or is it some kind of tower or lookout point type of thing?

That is the Observation Tower on the American side of the Niagara river. Its viewing platform cantilevers out; it looks like it might have once been a bridge, but it wasn't.

RightInNiagara, thanks for telling me that. I used to visit Niagara Falls quite often and I saw it and always wondered what it was! 😉
