I grew up in the Appalachian mts of West Virginia. All throughout the 70s l was growing up in a little mountain community called Jolo. Near a small town called Bradshaw. Deep in the mountains of McDowell County WVa. When I was around 10 or 12 years old, I remember there was a snake handling church down by the creek near a place called 3 forks. My friends and I would hide in the edge of the woods across the road and watch in the summer when the doors and windows were open. They would play music and dance with those snakes just like the video. When I saw this it brought back a lot of childhood memories. If I didn't know what I do about this being very real, I would say the snakes were fixed surgically, but their not. I saw with my own eyes live. They milked the snakes and drank the poison to build up immunity so the bites were ineffective. TRUE STORY

I'm from the south and in our church we offer thanks to God for giving us enough common sense to leave venomous snakes and angry women alone. I'm a firefighter and God protects us by providing good training and equipment and the common sense to use it. Mark 16:18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. There are two differences, though-1:We had between 400-500 people attending our Church on Sunday Morning, Sunday Night, Tuesday Night, and Friday Night. We had Prayer Services, too, where probably about 20-25 or so came out to pray, and get ahold of God, on Thursday Morning, and again on Saturday Night. No music was played at those Prayer Services, but The Lord was there! We had a lot of great times in the Lord! 2:No. We didn't handle Snakes, we didn't play with Fire, and we didn't drink Poison. We just got together, worshipped God, and let him take over the Service. Plenty of times, we'd go to Church at this Church, we'd start the Service at 700 on Sunday Night, and 7:30 during the Tuesday Night, and the Friday Night, Services...and there were times, when we didn't get out of Church, until 10:00 to 10:30 that night...and there may have been a few times, when we went slightly longer than that! As you can tell:We enjoyed ourselves! I sure do miss those days...but one sweet day, I plan on going home to be with Jesus, up in Heaven. Time will be no more, and we'll be rejoicing, while the ages roll on, forevermore!!!

I don't believe in offending creatures of life. It's written in the Bible not to offend, the snake was offended and struck back. The scripture refers to those that unknowingly interact with poisonous snakes in the wilderness and you accidently come upon them. They don't bite to consume but protect themselves. Kesley, your response to your aunt was pithy, but really the snakes aren't evil. They don't want to bite us. Like every other animal, they're afraid of humans, and with good reason. (They could be blown to bits by a 12-gauge.) But living in Malaysia was different. I lived in a nice house with a lovely old amah (maid), thanks to a British Council guy, who rented out a couple of rooms to me. While I was on vacation, a cobra got in the house. A neighbor came over and killed it. A normal reaction there, unfortunately.

I'm far from one of these people, but you have to admit, they handle those snakes and a very small number of them get bitten and an even smaller amount succumb to the bite if they get one. I Corinthian's 10:9 "Neither let us tempt Christ. As some of those have tempted, and were destroyed of serpents." God is not a puppet whose strings we can pull. Also, if they are going to take Mark literally, then why ommitt the second half about drinking poisons. Which some are known to kill a person in seconds. You cannot force God's hand to miraculously keep you from death when you choose to walk on a tightrope 10 stories high, with no safety net. God doesn't work that way. Just as Satan tried to tempt Jesus to jump, to show God's protective hand over him. Jesus said, "Do not put thy lord God to a test." This man died, because he was doing exactly that. That's why God gave us fear. To protect us from danger. Hence, why I'm scared of heights. It's a protective measure built into me. It's also why he gives us common sense. Lay in the middle of the street at night enough times. I gaurentee you. You will eventually get run over.
