FYI, touching the feet to show respect to elders or seniors is an entirely Hindu concept, culture and tradition. And this is not exclusive to North India but followed by Hindus across the nation. Yes, touching the feet of senior musicians in the world of Hindustani music is more visible than in Carnatic music. Artists born in Muslim families but who belong to the Hindustani music tradition follow these customs as well, as is expected. It’s a purely Hindu - and therefore, Indian phenomenon. Bowing down to a human, showing respect by touching feet, worshipping human... and even music for that matter, are all prohibited in Islam.

@@surajm4547 Sorry, those weren’t my thoughts at all! We are so obsessed with labelling this or that secular / non-secular that we forget or are ignorant of the basics - When anybody is a practitioner of Indian classical music, he or she automatically becomes intimately connected with the Hindu way of life. Praising Ustad ji for being secular because he touched someone’s feet inspite of being a Muslim is problematic, to say the least. He wouldn’t be an Indian Classical Musician in the first place had he stuck to his ‘being Muslim’. It’s like praising a Muslim Yoga teacher for doing Surya Namaskar even though his religion forbids it!! PS: I worship the artistry of Zakirji and have the utmost reverence for him. I have had the fortune of falling at his feet on several occasions.

But perhaps you said it in a different context. Hindus make a god of everything and everyone. Parents, teachers, government, stones,etc. This often legitimises the oppression of one human against another. You are NOT to question your elders, husband, teacher, government,boss and so on. While Muslims believe that man is only a humble slave of God, which to my mind is the right thought. And definitely, a Muslim or Hindu who adopts other religious practices can be labelled secular...as against one who strictly follows his religion by the book.

I am of the opinion that Indian Muslims should learn a few things from their Hindu counterparts. Hindus don't see the religion when admiring someone of great value and intellect. I am no follower of Hindutva or BJP, neither I have an ounce of admiration for that ideology, at the same time, Indian secularism is solely due to the Hindus of this country. ( I am not saying Muslims should do this Paata Namaskar ritual either, and I am not going to do this ever, but that might be because of the fact thst it's not common in our part of India. My point is even if you just stick with your own values and rituals, that's fine, at the same time you should have admiration for other people who are open about it. )
