People are ignoring berry bushes. I know they are bad food source but for early game I think they can't be beaten. They grow so fast and they don't need water so you can just gather half a stack, go underground, plant some and go mine. It would allow you to be more mobile, start underground earlier, and stay underground longer as well. And in early game Minecraft, I think hitting the mine earlier is an edge that really resonates to mid game. Would also give you a reason not to kill animals right away. You can just capture animals you find in boats and take note of their location for later. In this series' case as well, you can dig a hole and hide the boat with animals underground.
