This is sad. I had a baby in 1998 and lost a lot of blood. I was actually going into shock. Too weak to even hold my baby. I was still refusing a blood transfusion. My uncle caught aids through a transfusion. My doctor sat on my bad and explained that the blood was tested. He explained, worst case scenario if you do catch something it won’t kill you right away. You will get to know your baby. He told me if I didn’t take the blood I would die and never know my baby. I’m 18 at a hospital all alone. I had no family support. I took the blood , 4 whole pints. I felt better but I planned to breast feed my baby but after the blood transfusion I didn’t want to. I was scared if I had caught aids I didn’t want to pass it to my baby. That was 25 yrs ago and Thank God I’m good.

They didn't even have a way to detect it accurately back then. Early on they thought it was homosexual male only disease and that slowed research. It was in the mid 80's before they understood how it was transmitted. One big result was that it impacted how quickly they look at viruses and identify them. It resulted in the development of antiviral medications and they learned a lot about how to develop vaccines, especially with more rapidly evolving viruses. Blaming the hospital is easy in hindsight, but they didn't even suspect that it could be transmitted by blood transfusion early on. Now we know how to look for viruses, find antibodies, do viral loads, antibody levels and identify receptors for viruses effectively. This knowledge has led to better intervention for other viruses that have come along. It no longer decades to develop this information and develop effective treatments. People will still die from new viruses, but not anywhere near as many. Ebola was one of the first viruses that used used this new knowledge on. Unfortunately, vaccines for viruses aren't 100% effective and there are breakthrough cases. Polio helped to develop the technology and HIV helped evolve how long it took to figure out those processes. It is horrible that this family had to suffer through all of these losses and illnesses.

As of 2010, I changed locations & he was still thriving.

@BrandyD1777 Жыл бұрын
@@Teupluohoney 😅 Actually this was the short comment.... Here is another I left on main page. Please read when you have time. I cant begin to explain how this makes me so mad. I work with infectious disease. I worked under the Ryan White Program. Ryan was kicked out of school & his state. I applaud the Ray's for standing up & speaking out. So little was known then & it was believed & labeled G.R.I.D -gay related immune deficiency which was absolutely wrong. It was found in Chimpanzees located in Africa. Due to the killing of them eventually the people who had open wounds (bushwhackers) received the disease & over years it mutated to a human form. It is called "risky behavior" that puts a person at risk....such as unprotected sex (hetero, homo doesn't matter), anal, open wounds, sharing needles, even the mouth due to lack of care (bleeding gums, etc. yet it does take a bit more exposure). NO TEARS are NOT a way to contract unless you know someone who can fill a 10 gallon bucket within an hour & you dunk your open wound in it for hours. HIV/AIDS is now less deadly than Cancer, Flu, Covid, Pneumonia, Diabetes, etc. as long as you KNOW YOUR STATUS & take care of yourself. There are different strands that the best way to describe is dumb or smart....dumb may never show up, if & when, some dont need meds, it doesn't have the intelligence to figure out the "DNA" of the meds if you are put on them. Smart strands can figure out the makeup of the medicine and it'll stop working which then your doctor will put you on a different medicine or a combination. HIV is no different than AIDS except for two things. One you have an opportunistic infection ("OI"- pneumonia, Kaposi sarcoma, etc.) & Your t-cells (immune soliders) drop below 200. You can fix both of those bring your t-cells up but you never go back to the HIV status but you could be healthier than a person who has never gone to the AIDS status. This is why people thought Magic Johnson was cured. He is not, he is undetectable. That means that in so much blood that you can find little or none therefore it is hard to be transmitted to another. Regardless you must disclose your status and still protect yourself and others. Please research and educate yourself as well as many others around you so that the stigmatism disappeas and people understand this disease. If you are positive, do not have insurance or your insurance will not cover the whole cost because the meds are very expensive please contact your local health department and ask for help under the Ryan White program or a program called ADAP. DON'T GIVE UP! Most people would be surprised at the people that they come in contact with (not sexually but friends, coworkers, acquaintances, neighbors) are positive. Open your mind and your heart. Learn therefore whether you are positive or not, you can help someone. You can teach, educate friends, family, kids, and stand up for them. Hopefully the more people know the cost of the meds decrease.

I didn't know their story, but I read a little bit after watching this video. This family suffered a lot, not just because the illness of the three sons, but because of the bullying that their community applied to them. I understand people wanting to protect their children from a disease mostly unknown at the moment, but they didn't wanted that either, and people weren't compassionate enough to think "this family has had enough bad luck", no, they had to treat them like criminals and pariahs. R.I.P. the three of them

I’m just heartbroken for the parents. Even though their son is now a man it can’t make loosing him any easier. I’m just happy he was able to have a family of his own before he passed so his children can live and honor their father’s legacy, & love on their grandparents to make things a little easier for them to process. Sending love and hugs to that family, they will be in my thoughts.

As a teenager, I remember the story of Ryan White who also contracted AIDs from a blood transfusion, he passed away in April 1990. As a parent, I could not imagine how it feels to know all three of your children will not outlive you, that it could be as soon as a year or much longer but a natural life term is not an option. I pray stories like this are a thing of the past with new medications and the ability to keep immune systems stronger than ever before. No matter how a person contracts a deadly disease I think it is important for their story to be told. To the Ray family, I'm sorry you had to endure so much heartbreak, I hope you can find peace.

Heartbreaking but also hopeful due to medical advancements. I've had relatives and friends die of AIDS in the 80s and 90s. The prognosis was so bleak then. TBC, even though now it's considered a chronic disease and there is less stigma, AIDS is still a killer. RIP Randy, Ricky, and Robert

My heart goes out to Randy’s parents and family. In some ways, they were blessed to have Randy live so long and for him to have had children and grandchildren. They are his legacy. But, it doesn’t make the grief any less. I remember when this story was first reported. I felt so sad for the family. AIDS had so much fear and panic attached to it but it was unfair for the family to be treated the way they were. This also brings to mind Ryan White, who endured similar treatment.

I’m so sorry for this family and these guys. Hemophilia is inherited (I learned this 40 years ago) as I had a second cousin afflicted with it so for me personally I wouldn’t have had any more children if I found out my first born had it. I know these parents are suffering terribly nonetheless and I know the loss they’ve suffered. We lost my cousin early but from hemophilia itself and not AIDS. It’s a horrendous disease 🦠 May these men Rest In Peace and I’m sorry for the families loss.

This makes me sad. And to be honest as a pretty conservative woman makes me wonder if we’re all scared and worried about the wrong things these days. Why are we worried about how people dress or identify when there are so many more serious issues happening in the world! Replace “aids” with “trans” and it just goes to show how people can be so afraid of things that are unknown and new. Maybe I’m just having a soft moment and I’ll return to being a bitch in the morning !

Shut up. How did one of the few doctors in all of the federal government who was trying the most to get the Reagan Administration to pay attention and commit funding for HIV/AIDS have anything to do with how people were treated? It was PREACHERS AND PASTORS - good ol ignorant Christians - who had everything to do with the stigma, ignorance and FEAR attached to HIV/AIDS, not university educated doctors who knew viruses had nothing to do with 'gods wrath' or 'sinful ways'. What garbage
