I have a 1996 MT Tercel. It currently has 267,000 miles on it. The only thing mechanically wrong with it is the AC and heater. It is the super basic version, as it has no defroster, no clock, no rear speakers. I do have a tape deck. These cars were inexpensive, but not cheaply made. It is slow and basic, but it is the best car I've ever had.

bro the engines on these cars are damn near bulletproof, went on a road trip with mine while it was mixing gas and engine oil (stuck open injectors) and with the pcv valve clogged as well (it had a hellish amount of sludge cuz the previous owner didnt do maintenance) and with lots of tools in the back (easily 150 lbs plus my family bruh so like 300 more pounds) at full throttle for like 3 hours and made it back with NO PROBLEMS hahaha

Impressively well kept. I'm working on "restoring" a 97 CE now, but it's not staying stock. Trying to relive the magic of my first car..

I wish mine were that clean. I was looking for a Tercel of that generation, and they just aren't around anymore. I specifically wanted a 2 door model with a 4 speed auto because I used to know someone with one years back. I found a '95 which was exactly what I wanted, but it is a little rough. It has some rust in the rockers by the wheels, but is still very solid. The paint is also in bad shape. You never see these anymore because the kind of person who was going to buy a Tercel (the cheapest car Toyota sold) wasn't going to be able to afford to take care of it, or it was just so cheap they saw it as disposable. If you see something as disposable and treat it as disposable, then it is going to be disposable. So sadly most of them have been eaten up by salt in northern states, or just fell apart due to poor maintenance. But these really aren't disposable cars if you don't treat them as such, taken care of they last a very long time and won't let you down. They are also fun to drive because of how small, light and thin they are; the lack of power doesn't really make it any less fun to drive. You just can't get a car this basic and lightweight anymore because of safety and such. The fuel mileage is also something that most modern cars can't beat unless they are a hybrid or something.

I’m planing on buying a 1985 two door Toyota Tercel. It’s a manual, the back seats were taken out and make a really large back trunk thingy. I want to see what others think of these cars. It’ll definitely take some fixing, and a new paint job. But I hope it’ll come out real nice.

I have a 96 manual transmission and I love it so much. It's so much smaller than every other car on the road, even yaris and fits lol. That said, my Tercel isn't as clean as this one!

i have a '97 ce with 310K km on it that i bought for $500 in vancouver and drove to toronto a few years ago. there's a bit of body rust along the rockers on both sides that i filled with expanding foam, taped over with metal/aluminum tape and painted with rubber cement for waterproofing. i love it and my mechanic wants to buy it from me every time i go in for an oil change. i just replaced the starter, otherwise she just keeps rolling along. i am thinking of taking her through canada, central and south america, then selling her there, at the tip of argentina, before i continue on. any thoughts on what i should do to it for a trip like that? i was thinking of lifting it and adding a diy skid plate - that's it. thoughts? peace.

Did the three-speed automatic have a differential that required fluid. I've been told the four-speed does not have differential fluid that needs to be filled in the three-speed does can anyone clarify?
@WalterKnoxАй бұрын
Yes. That is correct. If you have an owner's manual, I believer there is a page that mentions this. The transmission fluid and differential oil on the 4 speed is the same, the 3 speed has separate differential oil. Used to be pretty common to see these cars and corollas with 3 speeds that just grinded gears and didn't move because people changed the trans fluid, but never the differential oil.

I had one with 350,000 miles on it, I lost it in a wreck. I never had a problem with it!!! I was changing the motor oil every 3 months. Sparks cable every year. It was stick shift, twice a month to fill the tank!! But because I lost that one. I found one year 95 stick shift. 199,000 and still running. I'm so grateful for my little Lamborghini!!!😂😊😊

14 inch tires are cheap if you can get them. I have 13s on my 93 civic and they're a special order everywhere in my area if they're even available at all. I looked into the possibility of swiping some 14s or 15s off a 6/7 gen Civic or older Fit/Insight from a junkyard but it looks like I'll be able to make due with 13s for now. Wicked cool car, but the automatic is a definite nope for me. 3 gears are NOT enough for me. Nice that it locks the torque converter though. The 4 speed in the 1st gen Tacoma with the 2.4 engine all the way up to 2004 had no lockup clutch! Insanity.
