Omg! They are so huge and firm! I was not expecting to discover that porcini are also present in AUS! Would be very interesting to see how they taste the one grown on those plants. Good season is approaching here in France... I hope for late may to start finding something 🤩

Thanks Dario. Some of the porcini are quite huge in Australia. The biggest one we found was over 1kg.

It's still a bit dry here in Australia despite being Autumn. So we have to wait for some rain.

Oh Australia! I didn't know we had these rompers down here. I'm going hunting tomorrow. I'm looking for these tiny little things not absolute rompers! Don't forget mushrooms are the fruiting bodies of these fungi so don't harvest them all. Humans have the power to really wipe things off the earth and Australia is second in the world with loss of biodiversity.

Question: why do you call them "porcini" which of course is Italian slang for "Boletus Edulis"? What does this word have to do with Southern Australia?
@FruitsOfLife0013 жыл бұрын
The boletus edulis isn't native to South Australia and was introduced here around 1980s. And we call them porcini too.
@francescocandian27083 жыл бұрын
@@FruitsOfLife001 Yes, of course! I was just wondering why the Italian word for them... Maybe it was an Italian to suggest and introduce their collection in South Australia...go figure!

@@FruitsOfLife001 I was raised in a family where we used to go hunting them every season. Its late spring now here in Europe and the first one started to come out. Hoping for a good season, because i have just one jar of dried left. They grow in abundance every 4-5 years... i have picked 40kg in 2 hours 3 years ago, but last few seasons were not so good, so i get them maybe just a few at a time when the conditions are right. Autmn is usually the best time for mushrooms here. Mushrooms and chestnuts, two of my favorite delicaties that can be found in forrest here.
@FruitsOfLife0013 жыл бұрын
@@roadrunner1095 that's amazing! Thank you so much for sharing your experience. Where in Europe do you live? I didn't know you can pickle porcini. Can you share your pickling recipe?
@roadrunner10953 жыл бұрын
@@FruitsOfLife001 I am from Slovenia. Hehe, I ment pick up/harvest, but they can be pickled of course. For pickling we choose young and healthy, diced in cubes. Basic pickling solution made 1:3 vinegar to water, add peppercorns and bayleaf. Not my favorite way to preserve porcini, because they taste like any pickled mushroom, but you can try it if you have a lot of them. Best way to store them is slice and freezing them raw, or drying. Btw, very nice herb that goes with porcini is Summer savory and thyme.
