Last Village in Singapore: Kampong Lorong Buangkok

In this episode, I explore Singapore’s last village: Kampong Lorong Buangkok. Along the way, I talk to visitors and locals to find out why people are flocking to this cluster of old houses. Then, I head up into a high rise to capture Singapore’s striking architectural anomaly.
The village was founded in 1956 when Mr. Shuen Teow Koon, a traditional Chinese medicine seller, bought the property. It was built along a canal on former swampland that would often flood. As a result, the village also became known as Selak Kain, which means to hike up your sarong or skirt in Malay.
That’s what people did when they had to wade through water to get home.
Today, there are just 10 Chinese and 8 Malay families living in the village.

I am 63 yrs now, born and grew up in Kampong Bahru. Now every day I miss my Kampong days, when everyone knew everyone, festivals were celebrated by the whole Kampong. Doors opened in the morning 6 am and only closed at 7 or 8 pm , all looked out for each other. When the Kampong was ordered to vacate, almost all the people there were sad. We knew we wouldn't be seeing each other anymore. Now, when seniors see each other we only talk about those days. Memories are precious, but heavy in our hearts too.

I used to live in a kampong like that as a kid... Similar to the houses here, we had zinc roofs. During the day, it can get a bit hot but when it rains it's like heaven... The sound of raindrops on zinc roofs is something I have never forgotten to this day. That safe feeling and soothing sound will make anyone sleep like baby.

This Kampong should be recognized as a State Level Monument and Heritage and Hope SG keep and maintain this village more more centuries

Definitely preserve. Had to rewind when I heard it was 20$ a month. Some people are amazing!

My mobile bills cost higher than renting a piece of land in that kampung in Singapore. I love the evening shots, where sight, smell and sound of rustic atmosphere was captured

The problem is they’re tiny small ass ISLAND!! But have alots ppl living & immigrants as well. They’re crazy super tight on lands. IN LAST DECADES, SINGAPORE EVEN STRICKEN TO GIVE FOREIGNERS GREENCARD PR. I don’t say it right, but I CAN UNDERSTAND WHY IN 60year they’re building millions apartment. Where lands? Of course, they’re take village lands & building apartments. 1 house big house for 1 families, but if this land build whole apartment - it can solve house crisis for thoundsand ppl. If Singapore is big as Taiwan, I’m sure NO ONE WIPE OFF HISTORY VILLAGE!! But the problem while Singapore is just big as a city size. YOU CAN ARGUMENT ABOUT IT BUT FOR ME, SINGAPORE LEADER & GORVEMENT IS SMART & DID AMAZING JOB ALREADY!! To solve housing crisis for millions ppl & building their country from poor dirty island to AMAZING COUNTRY, DEVELOPED & CLEAN, GREENS & HIGH-END WELL DESIGNED INFRASTRUCTURE!! And still keeping history side as much as possible.

When I was still in school I sometimes took a 'short cut' through Lor Buangkok from my home in Seletar HIlls to get to St Anne's church in Punggol Road. In those days it was faster to walk through Lor Buangkok to get to Punggol as it took about 30-40 mins by foot but over an hour by bus because there was no direct bus. Is it worth preserving? Yes. Now that the area no longer floods so frequently that many of those original occupants in the area were in constant fear of being washed away.

As long as it’s still there, we’ll visit next time we’re in town. People too quickly dismiss Singapore as a one big mall, but it doesn’t take much effort to find a few gems like this. Pulau Ubin is also highly recommended.

Hi Aivee, you do not need to contact the head of the village. You can just show up and walk in, at least when I went in November of 2020. There is a sign at the entrance which says it's private property and you must get permission. However, as long as you are respectful and don't invade people's privacy, you should be fine. If you're filming a video, you may want to talk to the owner beforehand. I did get permission to film this video from the owner. I don't have any plans to go back at the moment.
