LAST VISIT GORILLA BOKITO AND AJABU PLAYING WITH BROTHERS

Little did I know, this would be the last visit with Bokito alive. Weird to see him on video but know he isn't here anymore. For those who do not know Bokito got sick, and after two days they put him under to check everything and wanted to give him fluids because he didn't drank enough. He died during this check, because of heart failure. The group is doing okay, but it will be a challenge to find a new silverback and I'm curious how they're going to handle it while Ajabu is still so young. And silverbacks do have the tendency to kill the (young breastfeeding) offspring of other silverbacks, because they'll be able to mate again with the female and get their own bloodrelated offspring. Something time will learn how the zoo is going to handle it.
This video though was lovely, Ajabu playing with his siblings! Hope you'll enjoy seeing that and the last glimpse of Silverback Bokito. May he rest in peace.

That is so sad! All the drama Bokito went thru and surviving it! I was so happy to see him with his troop. There is a troop in Texas that lost their Silverback and had two babes! They had to wait for the little ones to get a bit bigger but they eventually found an older Silverback Marcus at New Mexico zoo! It was a challenge since one of the mothers died also. So the troop lost two beloved family members! Im so sad by this news tho😢 Seems like every year one of my beloved gorillas dies out of the blue!

I do hate this...absolutely hate that he died, especially leaving that baby behind. I do hope the zoo makes the careful decision to wait until that baby gets older before moving another male in... either that or find one that they absolutely KNOW is patient.

I think they'll do their absolute best. And they'll be getting advise of the breeding program which is in Apenheul, they've got a lot of expertise. No silverback in the group can lead to other problems, especially with the teenagers in this group. But for now it luckily seems to be all good. We all hate the situation and we also all miss Bokito.

😥😥I’m so sad to hear about Bokito - he seemed to have settled in so happily at Blijdorp and 27 is not old for a gorilla. 😢💔 A number of captive gorillas seem to have heart conditions - I wonder if it’s genetic? I believe there are only about 800 Western Lowland Gorillas in captivity - maybe the gene pool is getting too small. 🤔🤷‍♀️ Meanwhile baby Ajabu is having a wonderful time with his big brothers - I hope the group is coping ok with the loss of its beautiful leader. Or maybe this is how old they get. In the wild we know 20-30 is old for a silverback. Because we know some exceptions in zoos, we always think they'll become 50-60yrs. But if you look at the numbers of gorilla's who died in what age, a lot of them died in between 20-30yrs.

@@LiekesShotOfLife Hi Lieke - that is an excellent point! 👏👍 I should have thought of that! 😃 I’m amazed that female gorillas in captivity are still in such good health that they have babies in their mid-late 30s - I guess that wouldn’t happen in the wild either. 🙂

@@vjc2270 a friend of mine started some research on it. And the conclusion was more gorilla's die in their 20-30's then in their 40-50's. But indeed some females got extremely old. Something that wouldn't happen in the wild. Good care and extra food and some peace and quiet for the elder ones do good.

Lieke- I wonder if Lope from Twycross zoo will be the new Silverback. He is still quite young but has been separated from his family in preparation for moving in to a new family . His father wasn’t accepting him anymore. He is too old to join a bachelor group so maybe he is coming your way!

Maybe but it will probably take some time. Ajabu needs to be a little bit bigger to be able to defend himself if there is a new silverback and the teens need to accept a new silverback as well. It is a complex family structure at the moment to just put a silverback in there. Whatsoever I hope Lope soon finds a new place. No gorilla should be living on their own. But for now it is probably the only solution. We've also had that with Nasibu in Blijdorp Zoo.
