Fun Fact about Grant he was gifted cigars from the civil war to the end of his life even though he preferred to smoke a pipe, this also is the primary reason why he had cancer through the gifts of his fans. He was mute through for the last days of his life from the cancer in constant pain as well as impoverished due to failed capital ventures and abused trust in friends all this as he finished his masterpiece of literature to restore his family's fortune with the Grant memoirs. He would die shortly after not seeing a cent from the book he labored on his death bed to write.

He knew he was dying and he labored at writing his memoirs to secure his family financially. Grant is one of the most maligned presidents this country ever had, and today historians are admitting his presidency was not as bad as made out, and Grant the man was truly a gentle, good person who was taken advantage of by people in Govt.

@@seththomas9105 if we are honest though the least corrupt reconstruction president by a long mile as well. the reason why his presidency is targeted is because of his place in history as an important figure. He was idolized in both life and death from confederates and foreigners alike.

I don’t think the soldiers fighting under him liked him very much he was called “the butcher” because he’d throw men at a position until they gave up, ran out of bullets or retreated. He did feel bad about it of course but in a war where you’ve got more men than your enemies you sometimes need to do things like that. That’s total war unfortunately.
