I feel like this video was made just for me! My garden also doesn’t get a lot of sun. I winter sowed bachelor’s button and orlaya a few months ago and transplanted them to my garden in early December. Within a week, the mice discovered the bachelor’s buttons and decimated them. I’m winter sowing another batch now. I have no room indoors to sow seeds, so winter sowing is perfect for me.

Thank you Yuliya. 🥰 This is such helpful information. I’ve been learning about seed starting plants. While I don’t have space for indoor seed starting, the winter sowing method has intrigued me. Like you I don’t get a lot of sun in my yard. I have a lot of dry shade areas or the spots that are somewhat sunny only get the hot afternoon sun from the west. And I love all the sun loving flowers. So to see what has or has not worked for you is great. I’m trying to figure out what to plant in the areas under mostly pine trees that are dry shade in the morning but hot western afternoon sun. Not even my lawn will grow there. Zone 5 western MA.

I agree I grow things just to see the flower not the abundance because I deal with lots of shade here in the hot south Texas summers. So shade is more important than tons of flowers. Those who can do that good for yall. About those naughty bunnies I can only say they would be bunny soup. On the larkspur I can always count on them every year and they bloom in pink, white, blue and purple every where and any where. They self seed like crazy but they are gorgeous. Hollyhocks on the other hand always grow but never bloom? I have some for three years but no blooms. Any way it was nice hearing your experiences with flowers. Thanks Yulia.

I have only had success with poppies when I winter sow or sow them in really early spring. I had a lot of success growing them in the PNW, but have not been successful in Texas. I can get good germination, but we will get a very heavy winter/early spring rains that crush them and then it gets too hot for them.

I can't grow the Rocky Mountain Blue Columbine bcuz it's just too hot where I live (zone 8) but I do have the red/yellow Columbine, which I believe is called Eastern Red Columbine. I bought one plant, one time, and have had many plants ever since! They self seed, and any seeds I happen to add, I just toss them on the ground. I don't think they like to be transplanted? Altho, that may just be the variety I have. Mine also like the deep shade. Wish I could have the blue ones tho!!too! P.S. Right Now, this is one of the only plants that is green, and growing, in my garden. We even had 2½ inches of snow last week, our nights have been in the low 30's, and they are not showing any signs of damage! Of coarse, the new seeds won't start growing until Spring, but Columbine is one of my fav's!

Hi! I did grow the "Evening sent stalk" (sorry if I am making mistakes in my writing, am not native English speaking). This flower is very common in my country. During a day it looks little tired and have no sent but in evenings, after sun down it opens and then gives this nice smell . It likes shady parts of a garden, part sun and can grow on any kind of soil. It sent is very relaxing and beautiful, quite strong. Pity you couldn't enjoy it. Maybe give it another chance? Nice to watch your videos, thank you 😊

Recently watched Laura's (Garden Answer) winter sowing post and am wondering if both Yuliya and Laura collaborate on content prior to filming? Each one has their unique way of shedding "Light" on the growth habits of various plants and always taking into account the region/growing zone of the country where certain plants thrive... (BTW... did anyone notice that while Laura used "cloudy-colored" containers, Yuliya used clear for winter sowing??? Wonder if either had more success [or less] because of the type of container used [...And yes, Laura did address this in one of her recap videos]) ...Thoughts Yuliya? Or from the community???

Yes, region matters BIG TIME! We are in a similar zone but our climates are so different. I may address this at some point 😁😊

I keep watching these videos and ordering more seeds to winter sow and I already have about 35 sown jugs sitting out in my yard. I also have a LOT of shade (including a large area of dark, deep, zero sunshine shade) and get some high humidity, especially late in the season. I had some direct-sowing success last year but by the end of july everything was covered in powdery mildew and black spots. Grrr. Winter sowing (hopefully) to the rescue!
