Likely more true than you realise; this has unknown electrical tape (probably toxic) and cyanacrylate in multiple burning portions though the red phosphorus from the striker is removed that clear glue if cyanacrylate is a carcenogenic compound that aerosolizes when burned. If you know what you are doing removing the starter after the fire is going would make this safer but it likely would still taint the innitial burn materials with cancer causing materials and be extremely unsafe after striking. Strong reccomendation to swap at the very minimum the glue and tape for something safer to burn like masking tape and school glue. Wire wrap would still get the matches tight enough too.

I’ve been using cotton balls saturated in charcoal lighter fluid and dipped in paraffin wax for several years now. They’re easy to make and will burn for about 11 minutes. About the same thing you’re doing minus the pull start sparkler/sugar rock fuel concoction on the tip of your starter. In fact, if you have a reasonably good selling pill bottle, you can put saturated cotton balls of lighter fluid into the pill bottle and not even bother with the wax. I would imagine the lighter fluid may evaporate over a prolonged period of time. About the longest of had these in storage is maybe six or eight weeks and they worked perfectly fine. It’s just the ease of being able to make three of them inside of about 30 seconds.

This is honestly really well made and interesting, not sure I'd ever really have a use for these myself but all of the crafting techniques and things are still interesting to watch. I might try a super simple bastardized version of this if anything just for fun, don't do much camping myself. Edit: also wanted to add/ask, do you guys think this might be illegal to travel with? At least in the US the fuel mix he makes here is common in model rocketry and is called a sugar engine I think, the nitrate and sugar mix. This is treated as a low grade explosive though which is fully legal to make but illegal to transport without a certain license. Just a warning in case anyone is curious or doesn't know, I highly doubt you'd get your firestarters inspected or something just on the way to a campsite but just wanted to mention that.

Rather than use balloons as a waterproof sheath, why not dip the whole thing into a pot of wax as though you're making a candle? Would give more burn than the balloon and still be waterproof. Great video, really enjoy watching your stuff.
@SurvivalSpheres12 күн бұрын
The tip needs air right after ignition or the flame goes out. The ballon keeps it waterproof but will easily tear when it has to, opening up for the flame. It wouldn’t work like this with a bigger wax coating around the tip. Plus wax will crumble after a while as it is no solid wax body, but soft inside.
