"Euronaut" is a private project of a research and diver support submarine around Carsten Standfuss - a German naval architect. It has been designed between 1988 and 2000. Then it took another 12 years to build it on holidays, weekends and after work. Most systems on board are second hand and homebuilt.
The sub has overall length of 16 m (52 ft), surface displacement of 57 tons and is capable of diving up to 250 m (820 ft).
Transit speed is up to 6 knots with a 190 hp diesel engine. Electric drive measures 40 kW.
The life support system provides air for the crew of six persons for a week. The diving chamber allows saturation dives to the depths similar to the operational depth of the submarine.

Amazing... and pretty scary!! I never understand how actually works: for diving ok, take in water and spill out the air... but the opposite how do you do that? You can't create air from nothing. And so?
@Wrackzeichner
@Wrackzeichner 6 жыл бұрын
Pressurized air in cilinder tanks. That's how every submarine does it.
@MrMa1981
@MrMa1981 6 жыл бұрын
And that's why I still don't understand. Why that pressurized air, stocked somewhere, don't brings the submarine up? Is only the amount of water inside the tanks that do the job? And the pressurized air needs to spill out the water, and so, less water = bring the submarine up? Sorry for my basic language mode.
@Wrackzeichner
@Wrackzeichner 6 жыл бұрын
Because it's the volume of air that displaces the water from main ballast tanks and not the weight of this air. If you have 1000 litres of air in the atmosphere and if you pressurize it to 250 bar (which means 250 times) you can put all this air in a tank with only 4 litres of capacity. If you depressurize it again in a depth of say 10 m means you have to fight against 2 bar of ambient pressure (twice as much, as on surface). Therefore with this 4 litres from the cylinder you can displace 500 litres of water in 10 m depth. Or 333 litres in 20 m depth, or 250 litres in 30 m depth and so on. That's how you empty the ballast tanks. Pressure No1 x Volume Nr 1 = Pressure No2 x Volume Nr 2... This is the simpliest way I can explain the basic laws of thermodynamics from the school physics lessons...

wait, how in the world has this only got 288 likes? This thing is absolutely amazing! My Grandfather was a tin-smith and moonshine still maker in the applachian mountains. I remember one night he woke me up (drunk on moonshine) and told me that he was building me my personal submarine.... I was like 5 years old. I waited for years without daring pester him about the progress he was making.... Eventually I realized grandpa was a big drunk and probably forgot by the next morning hahaha.... Definitely makes my day to see people who actually got their sub, even if they built it themselves :-)

so about 2.8 million dollars for a navy sub
@krashd
@krashd 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that would be a small diesel as operated by most navies, a nuclear powered sub or god forbid a ballistic could set you back around 1.4 billion dollars.

this is an awesome machine. it it can go underwater it can also go into space like the Nazi's did with their modified U-boats. This would be great for observing underwater life, and if it's depth was sufficient it could also look for lost ship wreckage and maybe help with finding lost aircraft survivors etc. certainly help with distressed subs et al. The fact it is not military makes this a kind of Linux project where everyone could help with designing a better one. I am interested in the fact it is German. Yet again they appear to be historically the most mechanically able to produce such machines.

DAS BOOT! Awesome cool! The cartels in Latin America would pay you guys big money to build a fleet of these for them. Amazing build. Makes me very proud of my German heritage. Think about it... In Germany a couple of amateur enthusiasts design and build a fully functional submarine over a period of 24 years and is better than any submarine in the North Korean fleet. Congratulations!

well, those naval vessels have to justify their income somehow. Furthermore, god forbid if ever accord a shooting war, the navy needs to be able to distinguish a friendly/natural submarine from an enemy one.

@@DeagleGamesTV but this thing is only one and built recently they wouldn't be able to identify it submerged and 30 km away they would be confused of the new prop sound unless they see it on the surface which they already did

Would be awesome to build. But I bet the tooling equipment would cost more than the product. Could only imagine what it would take just to roll the steel for the hull.
