I live in Phoenix, and so I’m in a “border state.” On an average weekday, I go to the gym, go to work for my 9-10 hours, eat dinner, maybe chit chat with the neighbors, watch an episode of whatever show we are watching, etc. On the weekend, we will go for hike/bike ride if isn’t too hot, maybe take the paddle boards out, go to a brewery with friends to have a couple beers and hang out, etc. My point to all this is that it is so sad that such a high percentage of people consider the border to be a top issue for them. For it to be a top issue, you’d have to think it’s actively ruining their lives. I live in Phoenix. I can assure you that our lives go on and that I’m doing every day normal person stuff for fun and not arming myself for this “literal invasion.” Are those midwestern white people seriously affected by the border?
@RochelleHasTooManyHobbies5 ай бұрын
Republican midwestern white people can't seem to pick a narrative on illegal immigrants. They are simultaneously committing huge amounts of crime from the shadows and totally undocumented, but also ripping us off our tax dollars by getting free healthcare, free schooling for their kids, and free housing. They're also stealing our jobs but riding the government money train. Those ideas CAN coexist to them. Bizarre.

The hardest working people I know are two young adults from immigrant families. They both came to America knowing no English, had to learn it in school and were grateful for the extra classes unlike the kids who grew up here skipping school. Now they’re both managers at their respective jobs and still doing school to get grad degrees. Nice people who work hard, good luck finding that in the new hires who aren’t from immigrant families.

There’s a video of a guy interviewing at a Trump rally in the midwest where he yells asking for a SINGLE person to tell them a personal bad interaction with an immigrant. Each one only said “well my great grandmother’s friend’s son was pickpocketed by a black guy” or “I saw this video on the news”. Not a single one could show a real example or experience - and some of them actually said “I wish I had one”. They “wish” they had one… He would go up and down the line screaming “Please, just ONE personal example of migrant crime”. Yet each one of these people are thoroughly convinced it’s the worst problem in the country - while their state legislators cut their education and healthcare, then blame the job loss from mass de-regulation on “Mexicans” (when the number of Mexican immigrants is wayyyy down)

I think one of the problems we have in america is that we don't celebrate the good decisions. I just checked and John is right, there has been an overall downward trend on violent crimes and theft. But I didn't know that. I also learned that more Americans are accessing advanced education as adults, and a decrease in the rate of drivers on the road, which is a good for the environment. IDK, instead of the oscars we should be reviewing these metrics once a year as a country and celebrating the good things. I guess it's hard when the bad things are so bad, but if we focus on that all the time, we might forget why we're voting and speaking our minds in the first place.

I think it's worth pointing out that a lot of low-wage jobs (farm work, janitorial staff, meatpacking, etc.) in the US are done by people who came into the country unauthorized and are being taken advantage of by their employers. The companies that hire them can get away with a lot of shitty labor practices, bc they know the employees won't report them for fear of getting deported. A lot of unauthorized migrants also pay taxes but don't get benefits like Social Security or similar. If there really was a 'mass deportation' of hundreds of thousands of migrants, the economy would probably fall apart lol

Big labor has a role in this, and it generally hasn’t been to lend a hand to the exploited migrant workers. Meanwhile, it’s telling that the conservative rhetoric scapegoats the workers instead of the companies who hire them under the table.

I know of a person here on a work visa who went to a year-end party and had some drinks. She decided to nap in her car for a while instead of risking driving home. The cops showed up, arrested her for being under the influence, and she was deported, seriously inconveniencing the company that sponsored her. This probably went down as migrant crime.
@PhotonBeast5 ай бұрын
At the end of the day, they're using 'migrant' as a short hand for people they don't like and want; while at the same time, washing it of all actual meaning. 'cause migrant, immigrant, whatever is just someone what travels somewhere for some reason. Could be for a new life... could just be for work. Like, technically, I'm a migrant because I'm an American tech worker that lives in the Netherlands - heck, my visa says "Highly Skilled Migrant" (in Dutch). The fact that I am labelled a migrant doesn't magically turn me into a criminal. If it does, it's things like "I didn't know I could park my bike there... because I can't read Dutch yet so I didn't notice the sign." or getting on the tram via the exit instead of the entrance (but that's easy to learn after the first time it happens). You know, small cultural things that just take time to learn and figure out when it's not your culture of birth or not similar enough, and you're thrust into it expecting to know it all on day one.

Migrant and refugees are different though. Migrant crime should be called refugee crime. Most migrants come to the US because they want to be a part of the US, part of the culture, contribute to society etc. Refugees are different, they just need a safe place and many of them are crminals, they use illegal means to enter a country while migrants take the legal route and it takes them sometimes YEARS. They are not the same group of people.

That's good because Trump was talking about illegal migrants and not your Panda Express manager who couldn't have been hired without at least a green card. Maybe first learn the difference between documented and undocumented illegal immigrants who are criminals by default (yes unauthorized crossing a national border is illegal sorry). They can do it the legal way but they choose not to and they should be treated as the criminals that they are.
