Go Here: www.lvshaolin.c... | Serrada Eskrima Counters
In the Serrada style of Eskrima there is a heavy emphasis on stick vs. stick counters striking techniques. The bulk, 80% of the style is contained within these counters.
Don't get me wrong, there are sinawali,(weaving double stick patterns) and there are knife defense techniques, but the first thing you learn after sinawalis is counters.
How effective is it to learn stick vs. stick counters in real life?
I am sure in today's world you will never encounter an assailant who is wielding a rattan stick and you just so happen to have your rattan stick in your hand. You both face off in mortal combat. That will never happen but that is missing the true point. All of the stick counters can be used without a stick.
If you can defend against someone with a weapon in their hand then you can definitely defend against empty-handed techniques vs. empty-handed techniques.
Think about it the tip of a stick is moving very fast in combat. Even in drills, it moves very fast. Stick training gives you a sense of visual acuity. It gives you a sense of what speed looks like coming at you. After seeing a very fast-moving tip of a stick coming at you, seeing a punch coming at you can look like slow motion. Not really, but a punch does seem to move a lot slower after seeing a stick come at you.
