Lata Mangeshkar speaks of controversies -(Asha Bhosle, Suman Kalyanpur, Vani Jairam and Runa Laila)

For a Long time Lata Mangeshkar has been accused of influencing Music Composers to choose her and in this way Lata continued her dominance in the industry and never let fresh talents come to the forefront. Excerpt of an interview from 1997, with Rajiv Shukla where she gets really candid on these accusations.
In this video, Lata Mangeshkar speaks of controversies surrounding co singers for the likes of Suman Kalyanpur, Vani Jairam , Runa Laila and her own sister Asha Bhosle and about their rivalry. Lata Mangeshkar explains that she never had any upper hand on creating dominance and any influence thereof to the Music directors, but they were given work as per their calibre. She is deeply saddened by the issue with Runa Laila and for Sumanji, She mentions that she in-fact left the song that was composed for her to give opportunities for up coming singers.
Lataji further adds that these rumours are spread by gossip mongers and she doesnot pay much heed to them.
This Video does speak for itself and with her clearing of these rumours that talent is always well received, and fame comes to the one deserving. The result is a 70 years of illustrious career. She is truly the queen of melodies and her voice and the magic that it creates will linger on for years to come.

The fact remains that she pressurized composers not to take upcoming singers. You cannot deny it. There are proofs enough. She quarrelled with SJ for giving break to Sharda and Mubarak Beghum. She wanted LP to remove Usha Timothy. She didn't sing for OPN because he promoted Asha. She didn't have good terms with SD Burman because he took he gave break to Geeta Dutt. She didn't accept Filmfare awards because of her difference with the committee. Rafi was fully correct when he said, the composer and not singer should get the royality as copyright rests with the former. That was his opinion. Should it be the reson for not singing with Rafi? She was envious of Suman Kalyanpur.

As a tamilian who is brought up in the north, I hv had the chance to listen to Lataji and Ashaj and so also P Suseela ma and Janaki Amma... These two singers are equally talented . Lataji had no reason to feel insecure about new entrants into the industry. I doubt if any one among her contemporaries could sing her raga based songs from the movie Anuradha as well. I fully agree with Niluswar's comments about Lataji. Other singers mentioned were nowhere close to her. But that can be judged by the experts and not by normal.listeners. My eldest brother was one who studied music and he pointed out the nuances between other singers and Lataji and Ashaji. Even now thousands of singers have tried to copy their songs but they are nowhere even close. Let us admit that they were the best. I have great regards for Suman Kalyanpur but tell me a single classical song that she has sung. I can tell whether it is Suman Kalyanpur or Lataji within 3-4 seconds of the start of the song. Such is the difference. They nay have indulged in these things after 90s but remember that all old music directors in 50, 60, 70s wanted that the songs should be sung by Lataji only. All said and done we are lucky that we were born at the right era where we could see and listen to Lataji .

As someone who grew up in the South listening to stalwarts of our region, by the time I was exposed to Hindi music I already had my strong likes and dislikes. So I never developed strong liking for Lata Ji 's voice. That doesn't mean my my ears cant detect her extra ordinary talent. And, my taste never came in the way of realizing what a Goddess of music she has been for decades. Her talent is beyond any language can describe so I dont think she had any reason to even feel threatened by anyone else's talent. Lata Mangeshkar has worked with almost all music directors from Golden Era to Post Golden Era, except, O. P. Nayyar. It was because of the trends, O. P. Nayyar has said in many of his interviews, there was no any problem with Lata ji, he has full respect for her indeed, but the genre he creates in music, is not completely matchable for Lata ji, even, he hasn't accepted Lata Mangeshkar Award & he has said that how could he accept that award named after the singer, with whom he hasn't worked ever? This incident shows his respect for Lata ji. On the other side, Lata ji has also said in some of her interviews, not only O. P. Nayyar, but also she accepts the same fact that his genre is not suitable for her, it's suitable for Asha ji, or Geeta, or Shamshad. When we hear the music of O. P. Nayyar, we could understand the fact. Lata ji has also said, O. P. Nayyar has given respect to her always.

I do not have got any video clipping where any artist, film maker, lyricist, music director, singer etc has said anything negative about the character of Rafi Sahab. He was and will always remain the greatest singer among all the greats whether males or females. Lata ji was also a pioneer name and she will be remembered forever by upcoming generations but singing capabilities of Mohd. Rafi sahab can never be matched by any other singer. It is absolutely true. Rafi sahab was a gentle soul and thoroughly a down to earth person. There are millions of people in this whole world who believe that he deserves Bharat Ratna Award more than anyone.
